How to Format Content for ChatGPT and Perplexity

Part 4: How to Format Your Content for ChatGPT and Perplexity

In Part 1, I showed how AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity sent real traffic to my site.

In Part 2, I explained what AI SEO actually is and how it’s different from Google SEO.

In Part 3, I broke down what my Shopify analytics revealed about where that traffic landed and how it converted.

Now in Part 4, I want to show you how to format your content so these AI tools can actually find it, use it, and share it.

🤖 Why Formatting Matters for AI Tools

AI tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT don’t just scan your site like Google—they summarize content in real time and show it as part of an answer.

If your page is hard to follow, cluttered, or vague, it might be skipped. But if your content is clean, clear, and structured, it’s far more likely to be cited.

🧱 How to Structure Your Pages for AI Visibility

Here’s what I’ve learned from my own results—and what you can do, even if you’re just starting out.

✅ 1. Use Clear, Descriptive Headings (H1, H2, H3)

Don’t just bold your text. Use real headings:

  • H1 for your title
  • H2 for main sections
  • H3 for subpoints under those sections

AI tools rely on this structure to understand what your content is about.

✅ 2. Break Up Paragraphs (2–4 Lines Max)

Long blocks of text get skipped. Keep your paragraphs short so they’re easy to summarize and scan.

✅ 3. Use Lists and Tables to Summarize Info

If you’re explaining multiple points, put them in a list:

  • They’re easier to follow
  • AI tools treat them like structured data
  • Readers stay engaged

Tables also help explain comparisons or structured concepts clearly.

✅ 4. Create Original Labels and Names

My content started showing up when I used original names like:

  • Flagship Song Plan
  • $5 Starter Toolkit

Even without backlinks or heavy SEO, those names stood out—and gave AI tools something to latch onto.

Create your own terms, methods, or acronyms that simplify what you’re teaching.

✅ 5. End with a Clear Summary or Call to Action

Don’t leave your page hanging. Sum up what the reader should take away—and if possible, what they should do next.

That could be:

  • Download something
  • Read the next article
  • Start building something of their own

It helps AI close the loop when referencing your content.
