Prepare AI Music for DistroKid: Audacity Cleanup & Export Workflow (2026)

Do not run every Audacity effect just because you plan to upload a song.

The goal before DistroKid is not to make the waveform look processed. It is to deliver a finished file with no obvious defects, no accidental clipping, no unnecessary damage, and enough documentation to upload the release correctly.

The pre-release rule: diagnose before you process

AI-generated music can arrive with very different problems. One track may be release-ready except for a single click. Another may have steady hiss. Another may have no cleanup problem at all but still need mastering. Treating all three with the same effect chain creates unnecessary risk.

CLICKS OR POPSRepair the transient defect. Do not automatically denoise or compress the whole song.
STEADY HISS OR NOISEUse Noise Reduction only when a real, reasonably consistent noise bed exists.
NOISE BETWEEN PHRASESA Noise Gate may help, but only when the noise falls below the wanted signal between sections.

Use the Noise Gate guide. A gate can attenuate noise between phrases, but it does not remove noise underneath louder music.

Song is too fast, too slow or wrong length

Use the Tempo, Speed & Pitch guide before stretching the entire file. Perceived pace and actual BPM are not the same problem.

You need a level target

Use the Peak vs Loudness Normalization guide. Normalize only when you know which measurement you are trying to change.

The mix is finished and needs final polish

A safer Audacity-to-DistroKid workflow

Preserve the original render. Keep an untouched source file before cleanup. If processing makes the song worse, you need a clean way back.
Listen before looking. Play the track from beginning to end on headphones or reliable speakers. Write down audible problems instead of choosing effects from the menu first.
Fix source-level problems upstream. If the chorus is wrong, a lyric is skipped, the arrangement collapses or a generation glitch spans an entire section, repair or regenerate that section before mastering the stereo file.
Repair only confirmed defects. Address clicks, real noise, bad edits or timing problems with the smallest effective intervention.
Recheck after every major process. Compare against the original and listen for smeared cymbals, dull transients, pumping, chopped reverb, narrowed stereo image or unnatural vocals.
Master only when the song itself is finished. Tonal balance, dynamic control, limiting and final loudness belong near the end—not in the middle of songwriting or repair.
Run final quality control. Listen from start to finish without touching anything. Check the first second, last second, transitions, fades, silent gaps and the loudest section.
Save the editable Audacity project. In Audacity 4, use the .aup4 project as your editable source-of-truth. Saving preserves tracks, clips, edits and realtime effects so you can return to the session later. An .aup4 file is an Audacity project—not the release audio you upload to DistroKid.
Export the release audio separately. Use File → Export audio or Ctrl+Shift+E. For a normal finished song, choose Export full project audio; Audacity mixes the project as it plays, including track gain, pan and effects, into the exported file. Use selected-audio or loop-region export only when that is intentionally the asset you need.
Choose the delivery format for the destination. Follow your distributor's current requirements. Keep a high-quality lossless master for your own archive even if you also create compressed listening copies. Do not mistake an MP3 convenience copy for your only master.
Prepare the release information. Audio quality is only one part of distribution. Credits, titles, artist naming, AI-use notes, artwork, release date and platform-specific metadata still need to be correct before upload.
Save ≠ Export. Save keeps the editable Audacity 4 project. Export creates the finished audio file another app, distributor or listener can use. Most release workflows need both.

What not to do before DistroKid

There is no universal “cut this frequency for reggae” or “boost this band for hip-hop” setting that fits every generated track. EQ should answer a problem you can actually hear.

If the dynamics already work, unnecessary compression can flatten impact, exaggerate noise or make vocals feel smaller.

Do not normalize, denoise and gate automatically

Each tool solves a different problem. Processing that is not needed is still processing—and every process can introduce artifacts.

Do not chase loudness before the song is finished

A louder unfinished song is still unfinished. Repair, arrangement and mix decisions come before final loudness.

Final pre-upload quality-control checklist

  • No obvious clipping, crackles, accidental edits or cut-off transients.
  • No cleanup effect is audibly stripping cymbals, ambience, consonants or reverb tails.
  • The opening and ending are intentional; there is no accidental dead air or abrupt truncation.
  • The stereo image feels stable and does not unexpectedly collapse or pull to one side.
  • The loudest section remains controlled without sounding crushed.
  • The song has been checked on more than one playback system when possible.
  • You have kept both the editable .aup4 project and a high-quality exported master.
  • The exported file is the intended full project or range—not an accidental selection-only export.
  • Song title, artist name, version name, credits, artwork and release information are ready before upload.

Audacity does not decide whether the song is ready

It is easy to keep processing because editing feels productive. The harder decision is knowing when a track is finished enough to release. If you are still changing arrangement, lyrics, timing, vocal identity or major production choices, you are not at the final cleanup stage yet.
