Noise Reduction in Audacity: AI Music Cleanup Guide (2026)
Updated August 2026: learn when Audacity Noise Reduction is appropriate for AI music, how to capture a useful noise profile, tune settings safely, use Residue, and avoid stripping detail from vocals, drums and ambience.
Noise Reduction is useful when your track contains steady background contamination. It is not a mandatory step for every AI-generated song—and stronger cleanup is not automatically better cleanup.
The real goal is to reduce a recognizable noise floor while preserving the vocal, instruments, transients, ambience and texture that make the track sound alive.
First: decide whether this is actually a Noise Reduction problem
Steady hiss or broadband noise
Good candidate. If the unwanted sound is consistent and you can isolate a section containing only that noise, Audacity can build a useful noise profile.
Constant hum, buzz or whistle
Maybe—but diagnose the frequency first. A narrow electrical tone may respond better to a Notch Filter before any broadband Noise Reduction.
Individual clicks or pops
Wrong tool. Use local repair or Click Removal instead of teaching Noise Reduction to treat short transients as a noise floor.
Changing AI glitch, warble or distortion
Usually wrong tool. Noise Reduction works best on relatively constant noise, not unstable generation artifacts that change with the music.
You do not have to normalize first
The previous version of this guide treated normalization → click removal → noise reduction as a fixed chain. That is too rigid. Audacity allows normalization before or after Noise Reduction, and the correct order depends on the problem you are solving.

A safer Noise Reduction workflow in Audacity
What the three main controls actually do
Noise Reduction (dB)
Controls how much the identified noise is turned down. Higher values remove more—but increase the chance of audible damage. Audacity recommends using the lowest value that makes the noise acceptable.
Sensitivity
Controls how much audio Audacity classifies as noise. Higher sensitivity catches more noise but can also classify wanted music as noise. Too little sensitivity can leave behind artificial-sounding bursts.
Frequency Smoothing
Spreads reduction into neighboring frequency bands. It can make artifacts less objectionable, but too much smoothing can reduce clarity. Lower values generally preserve music better when the wanted signal is strong.
Residue
Not a cleanup amount—a diagnostic mode. Use it to hear what is being removed. Recognizable pieces of your song in the residue are a warning that the settings are too aggressive.
Why 12 dB / 6 / 3 should not be treated as a universal preset
The old article recommended 12 dB Noise Reduction, Sensitivity 6 and Frequency Smoothing 3 as though those values were appropriate for AI music in general. They are not.
Those numbers can be reasonable in some restoration situations, but the correct settings depend on the relationship between the noise and the wanted signal. A quiet hiss beneath a dense instrumental is a very different problem from hiss underneath an exposed vocal intro. A dark synth pad is easier to accidentally classify as noise than a bright percussion-heavy section.
Your target is not a preset. Your target is the smallest audible intervention that solves the actual problem.
Use Residue as your damage detector
This is the most useful part of the workflow for creators who do not want to become audio engineers.
- If the residue sounds mostly like hiss, hum or broadband noise, you are probably targeting the right material.
- If you hear recognizable vocal consonants, hi-hats, cymbals, snare attack or melodic content, reduce the amount or sensitivity.
- If the cleaned version develops chirps, metallic ringing, watery texture or tiny random tones, the noise profile may be poor or the settings may be too aggressive.
- If the noise changes significantly across the song, one global profile may not represent the whole track. Treat separate regions separately—or decide that regeneration/local repair is safer.
Hum and whistles may need a Notch Filter first
A narrow electrical tone is different from broadband hiss. Audacity specifically recommends considering a Notch Filter for mains hum or a high-pitched whistle before applying Noise Reduction.
For North American mains hum, 60 Hz is a common fundamental frequency; in many other regions, 50 Hz is common. Harmonics can also appear above the fundamental. The point is not to blindly notch every multiple—it is to identify the actual tone and remove only what is necessary.

Common mistakes that make AI music sound worse
Using a section that contains music as the noise profile
Audacity learns from what you give it. If the profile includes a pad, vocal breath, reverb or instrument tail, you risk teaching the effect to remove part of the song.
Processing the entire track by default
Global processing makes sense only when the same noise exists globally. If the issue is local, keep the repair local.
Chasing total silence
A small amount of harmless noise can sound more natural than aggressive reduction artifacts. Release-ready audio does not require every quiet moment to become digitally empty.
Judging only on headphones at extreme volume
If you turn the monitor level up enough, you will hear imperfections in almost anything. Judge the defect in realistic listening context before deciding it needs treatment.
Where Noise Reduction belongs in the finishing workflow
A practical order is:
Choose the best source → repair clicks/glitches → notch obvious tones if needed → reduce steady noise if needed → tonal/mix work → limiting/mastering → loudness and export checks.
Noise Reduction is conditional. If the render does not have a meaningful noise problem, skip it. Every unnecessary process is another opportunity to damage a track that was already working.

If the noise is only one issue in a nearly finished track, use the broader workflow to decide what actually needs repair, what should be left alone, and what belongs in mastering.
