AI-Assisted or AI-Generated? Which Label Actually Fits Your Music?
Use this guide to classify the finished sound recording as AI-generated, AI-assisted or hybrid under current music-industry frameworks. Classification is separate from EU legal disclosure, YouTube labels, distributor declarations and copyright.

You used AI. That still does not tell us how the song was made.
Two creators can both say, “I made this with AI,” while describing completely different creative processes. One may have written, performed and arranged most of the recording with AI used for a specific role. Another may have entered a prompt and selected the strongest complete generation.
Those workflows are not identical. And in 2026, the music business is beginning to build labels that try to describe the difference.
The question is no longer just “Did you use AI?”
It is becoming: what did the AI actually generate, and what did the human actually create?
The claim
“If I wrote the lyrics, chose the prompt and edited the result, my song is AI-assisted—not AI-generated.”
Reality Check: not necessarily.
On July 10, 2026, IFPI, RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, The Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign announced a voluntary track-level labeling approach designed to distinguish AI-Generated from AI-Assisted sound recordings.
Under that framework, an AI-Generated recording is one where generative AI created the entirety or primary portion of the recording’s creative elements—for example, an AI lead vocal, a key AI instrumental performance or essentially prompt-generated music. AI-Assisted describes a recording that is substantially human-created, with humans performing the lead vocal and primary instruments while generative AI contributes some expressive elements.

The first distinction most creators miss: recording is not the same thing as composition
You may have written every lyric yourself. That can be a meaningful human contribution. But if a generative system produced the lead vocal, the instrumental performance, the arrangement and the finished sonic performance, the sound recording may still fit an AI-Generated label under this particular voluntary industry framework.
That does not erase your lyric writing. It means the label is answering a narrower question: how was this recording generated?
The announced labeling program currently applies to sound recordings. It does not, by itself, classify lyrics, composition, music videos or cover art, and it is not a ruling on copyright ownership or registration.
Five questions I would ask before choosing any label
This is not a legal test or an official platform standard. It is the practical Jack Righteous check I would use before describing a workflow.
1. Who or what created the lead vocal?
If the final lead performance was generated by AI, that is a major part of the recording—not a minor production assist.
2. Who or what created the primary instrumental performance?
A human composition can still become an AI-generated recording if AI performs most of what listeners actually hear.
3. Was the finished track essentially prompt-to-master?
Choosing among generations is creative judgment, but it is different from performing or rebuilding the primary recorded elements.
4. What did the human materially originate, perform, arrange, replace or revise?
Keep this specific. “I worked on it a lot” is much weaker than a documented list of decisions and contributions.
5. Which rule are you actually trying to satisfy?
An industry transparency label, Spotify metadata, Tidal policy and copyright analysis are different systems. Do not collapse them into one definition.
Five realistic examples
Case A — Human lyrics, full Suno generation: You write the lyrics and creative brief; Suno generates the lead vocal, instrumentation and finished recording. Under the voluntary industry sound-recording framework, this can still lean AI-Generated because the primary recorded performance came from generative AI. Your human-written lyrics remain a separate contribution.
Case B — Human song, AI production help: You write the song, perform the lead vocal and primary instruments, then use generative AI for a supporting texture or production element. This is much closer to AI-Assisted.
Case C — AI draft, human rebuild: AI gives you a demo, but you replace the lead vocal, replay major instrumentation, restructure the arrangement and materially rebuild the final master. Classification should follow the final recording and the specific rule being applied—not merely the tool that started the idea.
Case D — Full prompt-generated track: The system generates the music, vocal and performance from prompts with little material replacement. This is the clearest AI-Generated case.
Case E — Mixed role-by-role workflow: Human lyrics, human vocal, AI backing vocals, AI instrumental texture and human final production. A single whole-track label may hide useful detail—which is exactly why Spotify’s current AI Credits operate at the role level.
Spotify is already showing why one label may not be enough
Spotify’s AI Credits are currently in beta. They identify AI contribution by specific role—such as lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances or production—rather than labeling the whole track as AI-generated.
The credits are optional, currently visible to listeners on mobile, and depend on distributor support. Spotify also says the absence of AI Credits does not prove that AI was not used.
That is a different system from the industry’s proposed track-level AI-Generated / AI-Assisted labels.
Spotify also explicitly separates how the music was made from who the public-facing artist identity represents. AI Credits describe AI contribution to the recording, while AI Persona badges concern artist identity. Spotify currently uses both “AI Persona” and “Likely AI Persona” badges depending on whether the artist self-discloses or Spotify applies the designation after review.

Tidal proves platform definitions can be different again
Tidal currently defines the recordings it acts on as AI-generated when they are wholly generated using generative AI. It says this narrower enforcement threshold reflects current detection limitations and the risk of false positives, and that it may expand action to substantially AI-generated recordings as detection improves.
Tidal labels recordings it determines are wholly AI-generated and says those recordings are not eligible for royalty attribution under its current policy.
So a track could sit in a gray area where an industry transparency framework might describe it one way while a platform’s current enforcement threshold treats it differently.

The biggest mistake: treating the label like a copyright decision
AI-Generated does not automatically mean “illegal.”
AI-Assisted does not automatically mean “copyrightable.”
Neither label automatically determines ownership or commercial permission.
Those questions depend on different facts: human authorship, contracts, source-platform terms, permissions, applicable law and what exactly you are trying to protect.

The Righteous Verdict
Claim: “I wrote the lyrics and edited the prompt, so my finished song is automatically AI-assisted.”
Verdict: NOT NECESSARILY.
Why: Under the voluntary industry sound-recording framework, the primary recorded creative elements matter. Human-written lyrics do not automatically convert an AI-performed recording into an AI-assisted recording.
Rights clarity: Separate question.
Copyright: Separate question.
Platform monetization: Separate question.
Artist authenticity: Separate question.
What I would do
I would keep a simple creation record for every serious release: the original human material, prompts and briefs, AI outputs used, versions rejected, sections replaced, stems, human performances, lyric revisions, arrangement decisions, exports and final master.
Then if a distributor, platform, collaborator or rights organization asks what AI did, I am not trying to reconstruct the answer six months later.
I would describe the workflow according to the system I am dealing with rather than inventing one universal definition and applying it everywhere.
What I would not do
I would not assume that writing the lyrics settles the classification of the recording. I would not assume that “AI-generated” means no human creativity exists anywhere in the project. And I would not treat a Spotify credit, an industry label, a copyright claim and a Tidal monetization decision as though they are interchangeable.
If this exposed a problem in your own workflow
If you cannot clearly explain what you contributed to your song, that is useful information. The problem is not that you need a better argument. The problem is that your creative process needs better evidence.
