How to Optimize Your Suno V6 Style of Music Prompt

You have a sound in mind, but Suno keeps missing the genre, groove, vocal, or production character. Here's how to fix the Style field without rewriting your whole song.

Keep the parts that work. Diagnose one mismatch. Change one meaningful Style instruction.
Answer first

What is the best way to optimize a Suno Style prompt?

Optimize the sound description—not the whole project. In Suno's Custom Mode, Styles describes the song's enduring sonic identity: leading genre, groove, defining instruments, overall vocal character, emotional energy, and production feel. If the output is wrong, identify which of those failed and edit only that part first.

A strong starting framework is main genre → rhythmic feel → two or three signature instruments → vocal role → emotional direction → production texture. It is a writing aid, not an official Suno command language or a guarantee that a model will obey every word.

Don't confuse the fields: put words that should be sung and local section labels in Lyrics. Put unwanted instruments or traits in Advanced Options → Exclude. Keep long story instructions in your planning notes, not in the Style box. See the Styles vs. Lyrics field guide for the full distinction.

Model choice: v6 is available on paid plans for controlled everyday creation; v6-wild is designed for greater exploration; v6-mini is available on all plans, including Free. Compare prompts with the same model and settings wherever possible. Suno's official v6 overview.
Worked example · Reggae

Before and after: from a vague wish to a testable direction

Imagine you want an uplifting reggae anthem with a strong groove and a conversational vocal. This example shows the reasoning behind the rewrite; it is illustrative, not a recorded performance comparison.

Before · Too many competing ideas
Reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, gospel, EDM, epic, massive, emotional, vintage, futuristic, powerful vocals, amazing production

Problem: no primary musical identity. Genres compete, the vocal has no defined role, and the words “epic” and “amazing” do not name audible choices.

After · Clear hierarchy
Modern roots reggae, relaxed 84 BPM pocket, deep rounded bass, crisp offbeat rhythm guitar, warm organ accents, conversational low male lead, hopeful communal chorus, warm live-band texture

Improvement: one genre leads, the groove has a recognizable identity, instruments have jobs, and the vocal and production directions are consistent.

Why this should be easier to evaluate: you can ask whether the generated version has the reggae pocket, bass prominence, lead-vocal style, and chorus energy you named. More precise language doesn't guarantee a result, but it makes a failure easier to diagnose.

Decision support

The best way to fix a Style prompt depends on what is wrong

What you hear What to change next What not to change yet
Wrong genre or random fusion Choose one lead genre and at most one supporting influence Do not add more genres as a repair
Groove feels generic Name the pocket: offbeat bounce, half-time march, rolling swing, straight pulse Keep a successful vocal direction stable
Too many instruments Name the two or three essential sounds; put genuinely unwanted ones in Exclude Do not ask for “more cinematic” and “more minimal” simultaneously
Wrong vocal character Specify register and delivery: close, raspy, airy, spoken, restrained Don't rewrite good lyrics to solve a broad vocal mismatch
Chorus has no lift Keep the broad style; add a short section-specific chorus cue in Lyrics Don't overload the entire Style prompt with local directions
Song mostly works Preserve the keeper; consider a targeted edit or Replace Section Don't restart the whole song for one local fault

For persistent model drift, also check the applicable control settings. Suno says its Variety slider can adjust or update style prompts; moving it toward 0 preserves the original style wording more closely. It does not ensure exact audio adherence. See Suno's v6 FAQ.

Try it · 10 minutes

Run one controlled Style-prompt improvement

  1. Open Suno Create, choose Custom Mode, and select a model available on your plan.
  2. Choose an existing song with a clear problem. Write one sentence: “The current version does X well, but Y is wrong.”
  3. Copy the original Style prompt into a note. Preserve its strongest elements before editing.
  4. Change just the failed layer. Example: replace “upbeat reggae” with “roots reggae with a relaxed offbeat guitar pocket and prominent round bass.”
  5. Keep your Lyrics and other available settings the same. Generate a comparable candidate if you have sufficient credits.
  6. Listen and note the outcome: keeper, promising but needs repair, or reject. Stop after a clear decision instead of adding random adjectives.
Useful copy-ready prompt · Soul
Intimate contemporary soul, slow 78 BPM groove, warm Rhodes piano, rounded bass, restrained live drums, clear low female alto, vulnerable verses opening into a confident chorus, close warm mix
Useful copy-ready prompt · Trap
Dark melodic trap, mid-tempo half-time pocket, deep controlled 808, spare piano motif, crisp hi-hats, gritty conversational male vocal, tense verses and a memorable restrained hook, punchy spacious production

Credit-conscious tip: The same generation can produce different audio even when the input does not change. Compare audible direction, not an imaginary guaranteed one-variable outcome. If you have a strong take, protect it before chasing another.

What belongs where

Style, Lyrics, and Exclude should agree—not compete

Styles: “Roots reggae, warm bass, relaxed pocket, conversational low male lead.”

Lyrics: Your original verse and chorus words, with short labels like [Verse 1] and [Chorus]. Add a brief local direction only if it solves a local issue.

Exclude: Only audible traits you want to avoid, such as “EDM drops” or “large crowd choir,” when relevant. Suno documents the Exclude option under Advanced Options; it is a helpful boundary, not a promise. Read Suno's Exclude instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Questions creators ask about Suno Style prompts

What should I write in Suno's Style of Music field?

Describe the song's global sound: leading genre, rhythm, defining instruments, broad vocal identity, emotion, and production texture. Keep actual sung words and local performance cues in Lyrics.

Should I use long or short prompts in Suno v6?

Use enough words to make the musical decisions clear, then remove redundant or contradictory language. A useful short prompt is better than a long list of competing genres and adjectives.

How do I stop Suno from ignoring my genre?

Make one primary genre unmistakable, reduce contradictory supporting influences, check model and settings, and test one controlled revision. Adherence still varies.

Does Suno v6-mini use a different prompt formula?

The same creative structure is a practical starting point. v6-mini is available to free users, while v6 and v6-wild require eligible subscriptions. Different models may interpret the same prompt differently.

Where should I put negative instructions?

Use Advanced Options → Exclude for unwanted instruments and other audio traits where that control is available. Prioritize positive direction in Styles.
