1. Driving passengers: Ontario's rideshare path

Ontario is not a single Uber rideshare market. Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Ottawa, Hamilton, London and other cities can have different local driver licensing, inspection and vehicle rules. Check your actual pickup city, not just your home province.

  • Toronto/GTA example: Uber's current onboarding guidance requires new passenger drivers to be at least 21 with a full Ontario G licence or accepted equivalent (not G1/G2). Local rules and minimum experience may differ elsewhere.
  • Screening and documents: Upload driver identification, proof of Canadian work eligibility, vehicle registration and insurance; pass the applicable screening.
  • Vehicle: Generally a four-door eligible car, in good condition, meeting the model-year rules for the city where you plan to pick up riders.
  • Municipal licensing: Toronto requires Private Transportation Company (PTC) driver authorization. Uber explains how approved drivers' PTC applications are submitted; training and local steps may be required.
  • Insurance and inspections: You still need personal auto coverage and applicable commercial rideshare protection, plus vehicle inspection documentation where required.

2. Toronto vehicle age, inspections and winter tires

  • City of Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and Brampton: Uber currently lists a seven-model-year requirement for UberX and UberXL pickup eligibility.
  • Other parts of the GTA: Some surrounding markets allow vehicles up to 10 model years old, but that does not make the car eligible to pick up passengers inside the stricter cities.
  • Vehicle inspection: The GTA requires a Safety Standards Certificate. Uber says the Toronto inspection is annual; in some circumstances mileage triggers an earlier inspection. Upload the required certificate on time.
  • Seasonal tire rule: Toronto and Mississauga PTC-licensed drivers must use qualifying snow or all-weather tires from December 1 to April 30 under Uber's listed requirements.

Car eligibility changes with the model year and city, so use the current Uber Toronto vehicle criteria and GTA inspection page before paying for repairs or purchasing a vehicle.

3. Uber Eats delivery has a separate onboarding path

You don't necessarily need to meet the passenger-rideshare vehicle rules to deliver food. Uber's Toronto guidance currently lists age 19 or older for car delivery, with a licensed driver, an eligible two- or four-door car, insurance and screening. Bike or walking options may be available with different requirements.

Uber's Toronto vehicle guide lists an older delivery-vehicle allowance than the passenger vehicle cutoff. That difference matters if your car cannot qualify for rideshare pickups but you still want to try delivery. Eligibility for bike, foot and other modes depends on local rules.

Read Uber's current Toronto delivery requirements before applying. Don't assume another Ontario city's options are identical.

4. Four checks before you register

  1. Choose the work. Passenger trips, food delivery, or both if your market and account permit it.
  2. Check city eligibility. Enter your actual work location and confirm age, licence, vehicle, permits, screening and insurance.
  3. Use the right signup. The driver and delivery buttons on this page use different referral codes. Read the live incentive and deadline that Uber displays for you.
  4. Measure what you keep. Record total online hours, kilometres, fuel/charging, insurance, inspections, maintenance, tolls, parking and taxes, not just the biggest trip.

5. Compare driving and delivering after expenses

A passenger ride can produce a larger single fare while requiring stricter onboarding, more vehicle costs or longer pickup distances. A food order can offer flexible transport modes but involve restaurant waits and shorter trips. Neither is universally better: compare net earnings per total hour online in your own market.
