How to Build Shopify Customer Segments for Onboarding: Free Users, Buyers and State Logic

Your emails can be excellent and your Flow can still fail if Shopify cannot reliably tell who is a free user, who has purchased, and who should no longer receive the same messages.

Core rule: customer status must control customer messaging.

This guide is part of the Jack Righteous Shopify onboarding path. Start with the starter hub, then use the 4-email free-to-paid sequence, this state-logic guide, and the post-purchase onboarding guide before moving into Apply and Build.

Why segments matter

A customer segment is not just a reporting list. In this workflow it represents a business state. The person may have signed up for free access, purchased the qualifying product, purchased long ago, unsubscribed from marketing, or re-entered through another form.

If those states are not separated, you get the classic mistakes: buyers keep receiving prospect emails, existing customers re-enter entry sequences, or people receive duplicate messages from overlapping automations.

The minimum states to define

FREE ACCESS — NO PURCHASE
Entered through the free offer and has not purchased the target product.
PAID CUSTOMER — NEW
Purchased the target product recently enough to belong in onboarding.
PAID CUSTOMER — ESTABLISHED
Owns the product but should not be treated as a new buyer.
NOT ELIGIBLE FOR MARKETING
Must not receive marketing messages that require consent.

Use identifiers and facts for different jobs

A tag can identify how someone entered. A segment can dynamically evaluate whether they still belong in a state. Order history can prove purchase. Marketing status can determine whether a promotional message is appropriate.

Do not force one field to do every job.

Example architecture

Entry tag: FREE-OFFER-A

Segment: customers with FREE-OFFER-A who have not purchased PRODUCT-A

Purchase state: order history confirms PRODUCT-A purchase

Onboarding eligibility: qualifying purchase plus any required communication eligibility

The most important exclusion

A purchaser must be excluded from the prospect sales path for the product they already bought.

That exclusion should be checked more than once in a delayed journey. A customer may be eligible when the sequence starts and purchase two days later. The workflow should re-check purchase state before later sales messages.

Sidekick prompt — create the free-user segment

Create a customer segment for people who entered through my [FREE OFFER] signup process but have not purchased [PAID PRODUCT].

Use the tag [FREE-TAG] as the free-access identifier if appropriate.

Before I apply the segment, explain exactly what criteria you used and show me which conditions exclude customers who have already purchased [PAID PRODUCT].

Sidekick prompt — create purchaser states

Create a customer segment for customers who have purchased [PAID PRODUCT].

If Shopify supports it with my available data, also create a separate segment for customers who purchased this product within the last 14 days.

Explain the filters before I approve them.

Edge cases to plan before activation

  • An existing purchaser submits the free form.
  • A free user buys after message one or two.
  • The same person submits the form twice.
  • A customer purchases the product more than once.
  • A purchase is refunded or cancelled.
  • A customer unsubscribes midway through a marketing journey.
  • Two automations can trigger from the same event.

For each case, write the intended state first. Then make the automation match it.

Human verification checklist

  • Inspect actual members of every segment.
  • Confirm the qualifying product is the exact product you mean.
  • Confirm existing purchasers are excluded from prospect messaging.
  • Confirm recent buyers enter customer onboarding only once.
  • Confirm duplicate signups do not create duplicate journeys.
  • Confirm marketing consent is respected where required.
  • Test a purchase midway through the free sequence.
