James the Brother of Jesus: Jerusalem Leader, Josephus, Paul & the Letter of James

James the brother of Jesus is one of the most important early Christian leaders—and one of the easiest figures to confuse with other men named James.

Not James son of Zebedee

James son of Zebedee is one of the Twelve and is executed in Acts 12. James son of Alphaeus is another member of the Twelve. James the brother of Jesus is a distinct figure who becomes prominent in Jerusalem.

Paul’s early evidence

Galatians 1 says Paul met ‘James, the Lord’s brother.’ In Galatians 2 James appears alongside Cephas and John as a recognized pillar. These references are especially important because Galatians is earlier than Acts.

Acts and Jerusalem leadership

Acts 12 has Peter tell others to report his escape to James. Acts 15 gives James a decisive speech at the Jerusalem Council. Acts 21 again places him at the center of the Jerusalem community.

Josephus

The Jewish historian Josephus, writing late in the first century, describes the execution of ‘James, the brother of Jesus who was called Christ.’ This passage in Antiquities 20 is widely regarded as an important non-Christian reference to both James and Jesus.

Did James write the Letter of James?

Christian tradition associates the New Testament Letter of James with Jesus’ brother. The letter itself identifies its author simply as ‘James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.’ Scholarly views on authorship vary, so direct authorship should not be presented as an uncontested fact.

Why James matters

James makes it impossible to tell the early-Christian story as though Jerusalem instantly disappeared once Paul began preaching. The Jesus movement remained connected to a major Jewish center led by Jesus’ own brother.
