Remove Clicks & Pops in Audacity: AI Music Repair Guide (2026)

One click can ruin an otherwise usable AI music render. That does not mean you should regenerate the whole song—or run aggressive cleanup across the entire track.

First identify the artifact. An isolated click, repeated pops, rapid crackle and broad digital distortion are different problems, and Audacity gives you different tools for each.

First: identify what you are actually hearing

One sharp click or pop

Start with a very small local repair. Audacity's Repair effect is often a better first choice than processing a large section.

Several obvious clicks

Click Removal can make sense when transient clicks are spread across a larger selected region.

Rapid soft crackle

This behaves more like repeating background contamination. Noise Reduction may be a better fit than Click Removal.

Broad glitch or distortion

Do not assume Click Removal can rebuild damaged audio. A local edit, replacement, re-export or source-level fix may preserve the song better.

Important: Click Removal is not a universal "AI cleanup" effect. Use it when the symptom matches. The goal is to remove the defect without changing the musical material around it.

Do you need to normalize before removing clicks?

No. Normalization is not a required first step. In fact, a loud click can influence peak-based level processing, so repairing obvious transient defects before final level work is often the cleaner sequence.

If your actual problem is level—not clicks—use the dedicated Peak vs Loudness Normalization guide. Do not use normalization as a substitute for repair.

A safer Click Removal workflow in Audacity

Keep an untouched version. Duplicate the track or save a version before destructive repair. You need a reliable A/B reference.
Select enough audio around the problem. Click Removal needs a meaningful selection; it is not designed around a microscopic single-sample edit.
Open Effect → Noise Removal and Repair → Click Removal. This is the current Audacity menu path.
Start with the current defaults. Preview before chasing numbers. A setting that works on one render is not a transferable recipe for another.
Adjust one control at a time. Lowering Threshold makes detection more sensitive but increases the risk of treating real musical transients as clicks. Increasing Max Spike Width can catch wider spikes but can also affect wanted audio.
Compare the repaired region against the original. Listen for softened drums, dulled attacks, strange holes or altered texture—not only whether the click disappeared.
Process only as widely as necessary. Do not run the entire song through Click Removal simply because one section has a defect.

There is no universal Threshold or Max Spike Width

The old version of this guide recommended fixed values. That is the wrong mental model for AI-generated audio.

Threshold

Lower = more sensitive. You may catch softer clicks, but you also increase false detections. Higher = less sensitive. You protect more wanted material, but may leave clicks behind.

Max Spike Width

Higher = allows wider detected spikes. That can help with wider defects, but it can also mistake wanted transients for damage. Use the smallest intervention that solves the audible problem.

The winning setting is not the biggest cleanup. It is the least processing that removes the defect without making the music worse.

If Audacity says Click Removal was not effective

Do not immediately force stronger settings. First confirm that Click Removal is the right tool. If it is, Audacity's guidance is to try a larger selection, carefully lower the Threshold, or carefully increase Max Spike Width.

If the click is isolated, switch approaches rather than fighting the algorithm.

For one isolated click, use Repair

Zoom in until the defect is visually identifiable. Waveform view may be enough; spectrogram view can help when the transient is hard to locate.
Select only the click and a tiny amount of surrounding undamaged audio. Audacity's Repair effect works on extremely short selections—up to 128 samples.
Choose Effect → Noise Removal and Repair → Repair. Audacity reconstructs the tiny selected region using neighboring audio.
Listen in context. A repair that sounds invisible in isolation can still create a timing or attack problem when the full mix plays.

Lowering gain after clipping does not restore the waveform that was already lost. Likewise, a broad AI generation glitch usually needs more than click detection. Diagnose first; process second.

Where click repair belongs in the finishing workflow

A cleaner order is:

Choose the best source → repair obvious clicks/glitches → reduce noise only if needed → tonal/mix work → limiting/mastering → loudness and export checks.

That sequence prevents a small artifact from driving later processing decisions. It also keeps you from treating every generated song with the same chain.
