Launch Your Book | Audience, Discovery & Book Marketing Intelligence
SELF-PUBLISHING INTELLIGENCE · SP09 · LAUNCH
Launch the Book. Then Build a Discovery System That Keeps Working.
SP08 makes the book findable, purchasable, and operationally coherent. SP09 connects that live release to the right readers through clear destinations, ethical review outreach, owned audience, search, email, social, partnerships, useful campaign assets, and a learning loop that continues after launch week.
A launch is not one loud week. It is a controlled reader journey: discovery → trust → useful action → relationship → return.
Bring forward the exact SP08 release state
Start with verified live URLs, format/version relationships, the approved metadata master, pricing and promotional boundaries, territory/exclusivity constraints, direct-store state, baseline reporting sources, known post-live issues, and the platform-update watch list. Do not market a version of the book that SP08 did not actually publish.
1. Give the launch one primary job
Choose the most important reader outcome for this release phase: qualified awareness, first readers, ethical review growth, owned-audience growth, direct sales, retailer discovery, library/bookstore/community visibility, or learning which message and channel attract the right reader. Secondary outcomes can exist, but they should not turn every asset into a pile of competing calls to action.
2. Map the reader journey
Where can the right reader first encounter the book while already caring about the problem, genre, subject, author, story, or community?
What helps that reader understand what the book is, who it is for, and why it may deserve attention?
What useful next step fits that intent: buy, preorder, read a sample, visit the book page, join the author list, attend an event, or recommend/request the book?
What can happen after the first action without turning the reader into a captive funnel?
What gives a satisfied reader a reason to come back for another book, useful update, event, companion, or author connection?
3. Build one authoritative book destination
Whenever practical, maintain an owned book page that explains the work clearly and routes readers to the appropriate retailer, direct offer, sample, author information, or next step. This is not a replacement for retailer pages. It is the stable home that helps a reader understand the book before choosing where and how to act.
Check headline, reader promise, cover, description, sample/excerpt, author context, retailer/direct links, review or endorsement area where appropriate, series/read-next context, email relationship option, mobile usability, accessibility, and broken links.
4. Audit the pages where the purchase actually happens
Retailer and direct-store pages are conversion surfaces. Confirm the correct cover, title, subtitle, author, edition, description, sample, linked formats, price, availability, author/series relationships, and any merchandising features the platform supports. If SP09 discovers a factual metadata or release-state problem, route it back to SP08 instead of “fixing” it only in campaign copy.
5. Build an ethical ARC and review system
Review copies can help appropriate readers, reviewers, bloggers, media, librarians, booksellers, book clubs, and subject communities evaluate the work. The goal is access and independent response—not manufactured praise.
- Choose recipients because their audience or interests genuinely fit the book.
- Record who received a copy, what format was supplied, when it was sent, and any relevant disclosure/platform rules.
- Never require a positive review, prescribe a rating, script an opinion, or hide a material relationship.
- Keep retailer/community review policies in the living currentness layer and verify them before outreach.
6. Use preorders and platform promotion as branches—not universal rules
Some platforms support preorders, samples, promotional copies/codes, feature requests, merchandising, or other launch tools. Those programs change and may depend on whether you publish direct or through an aggregator.
For example, Apple Books currently documents preorder, early-sample, promo-code, and promotional-feature workflows for publishers and independent authors. Treat those as Apple-specific opportunities and verify the live requirements before use. Review Apple Books launch guidance →
7. Use owned audience to deepen the relationship
Email is valuable because the creator controls the relationship more directly than on a rented social feed. Segment by relevance. Explain why the book matters to that reader. Give one clear next action. Then continue with useful context, excerpts, behind-the-book material, events, updates, or read-next information rather than repeating the same sales message indefinitely.
8. Give social and community content a job
Do not measure a launch by posting volume. Each asset should serve a reader job such as discovery, context, proof, participation, event, reminder, return, or owned-path movement. Track whether qualified people moved toward understanding, conversation, sample, purchase, signup, event participation, or another useful action.
Book-related audio, trailer music, readings, character themes, or story-world assets can support the campaign when they genuinely strengthen the book experience. They are optional creative bridges, not mandatory publishing tasks.
9. Build evergreen search discovery
Use owned pages and articles to answer questions real readers search for around the book’s subject, genre, themes, problems, author expertise, or story world. Connect useful content to the book with a clear next action. Do not distort the book’s positioning merely to chase a keyword.
SP08 remains the source of truth for retailer metadata. SP09 uses search and content to create qualified paths into that published truth.
10. Earn attention through relevant outreach
Build a targeted list of reviewers, bloggers, podcasts, newsletters, video creators, book clubs, libraries, booksellers, schools, educators, professional communities, events, festivals, and creator collaborators only where the book fits their audience. The pitch should answer: why is this useful or interesting to their people?
Preserve relationships that prove valuable. SP10 can use them again for the backlist and future releases.
11. Build a launch asset pack by job
Possible assets include the canonical book page, retailer links, approved cover files, short and long descriptions, author bio, excerpts, sample chapters, Q&A, review-copy material, media notes, social graphics, short video, readings, event material, and book-related audio where relevant.
For every asset, record its audience, job, channel, destination, rights/source status, version, and performance signal. An asset with no job and no next action is decoration.
12. Treat paid promotion as a test—not a requirement
Define the objective, audience, creative, destination, budget, tracking method, useful action, and stop/continue rule before spending. Compare the result to the economics and reader value of the book. If attribution is weak, label it weak instead of inventing precision.
13. Establish the baseline before interpreting movement
Use the reporting sources SP08 identified. Depending on the channel, useful evidence can include owned-page visits, retailer clicks, direct-store conversion, retailer sales, email signups/clicks, sample activity where available, review growth, outreach responses, event participation, referral sources, and read-next actions.
Platform data rarely gives perfect attribution. Record what you know, what you infer, and what you cannot prove.
14. Run the post-launch learning loop
OBSERVE → DIAGNOSE → TEST → RECORD → KEEP / STOP
A campaign should teach you something. Track which message, asset, channel, destination, reader segment, partnership, price/promo window, or content path produced useful movement. Preserve failed tests too; they can prevent the next launch from repeating the same waste.
15. Know when SP09 must reopen an earlier stage
Broken links, wrong prices, duplicate listings, territory problems, incorrect metadata, or format-linking defects return to SP08. Campaign claims that expose factual, rights, or production problems may reopen SP06 or SP07. Marketing does not get to invent a cleaner book than the one that actually exists.
SP09 readiness gate
- Every major traffic source has a useful destination.
- The primary reader and promise remain consistent from SP02 through the live offer.
- Canonical book and retailer/direct pages have been checked.
- ARC/review outreach has an ethical, platform-aware record.
- Email, social, search, and outreach work have specific reader jobs rather than generic activity targets.
- The asset pack is sufficient for the chosen channels.
- Tracking sources and baseline metrics are recorded.
- SP08 territory, exclusivity, pricing, and promotion boundaries are respected.
- Broken links and critical listing defects are resolved or controlled.
- Post-launch measurement and optimization have an owner and cadence.
The SP09 completion artifact
Maintain a Book Launch & Discovery Record tied to the actual SP08 release. It should show the launch objective, reader journey, destinations, retailer/direct-page audits, ARC/review outreach, owned audience, social/community, search, partnerships, asset pack, campaign calendar, paid tests where used, baseline metrics, learning ledger, issues, and SP10 handoff.
The goal is not to prove that every campaign worked. The goal is to know what happened well enough to make the next decision intelligently.
Shared foundation: Find Your Brand
Find Your Brand remains the broader creator system for identity, owned home, message, trust, commerce, and audience relationships. SP09 consumes those capabilities for a specific published book. It does not recreate them.
Next: build beyond one book
SP10 uses the evidence from SP09—reader behavior, best-performing messages, review themes, owned-audience growth, useful relationships, search assets, read-next behavior, and real demand—to decide what deserves to become a backlist, series, companion, revised edition, product, licence, adaptation, or next book.
