Sennacherib’s 701 BCE Campaign: What Assyria Says About Hezekiah

An Assyrian king leaves his own version of the war
Sennacherib ruled one of the dominant empires of the ancient Near East. His royal inscriptions describe multiple military campaigns, including his western campaign in 701 BCE against rebels and resistant kingdoms that included Judah.
The British Museum’s Taylor Prism records tribute received from Hezekiah, king of Judah, in connection with that campaign. Other copies of Sennacherib’s annals preserve the famous boast that Hezekiah was confined in Jerusalem like a bird in a cage.
What the Assyrian account claims
Sennacherib presents himself as victorious. He says Judean fortified cities were captured, territory was stripped away, Hezekiah was isolated in Jerusalem, and substantial tribute was imposed. Royal inscriptions are political texts designed to magnify a king’s success, but that does not make them useless. They provide an independent imperial witness that Hezekiah, Judah and the campaign belong to the geopolitical world described in Kings.
What it does not claim
The striking omission is that Sennacherib does not boast of capturing Jerusalem or removing Hezekiah. That matters because Assyrian kings were not shy about celebrating conquered capitals. The historical minimum is therefore significant: Assyria devastated Judah and pressured Jerusalem, yet Hezekiah remained king and Jerusalem remained outside a claimed Assyrian capture.
Do the records prove the Bible?
No single inscription proves the theological explanation in 2 Kings 19. Conversely, the biblical account should not be dismissed simply because Assyria frames the campaign differently. The sources have different purposes. The royal prism advertises imperial victory; Kings interprets Judah’s crisis through covenant, prayer and divine deliverance.
Evidence boundary: external inscriptions strongly anchor Sennacherib, Hezekiah, tribute and the 701 BCE campaign. They do not independently verify the Bible’s reported angelic destruction of the Assyrian army.
