Harmony is not a list of emotion presets. It is movement: what feels settled, what leaves home, what creates expectation, and what finally resolves.

A chord is a relationship. A progression is movement.
A chord is a group of pitches heard together. A basic triad contains a root, third and fifth. Major, minor, diminished and augmented describe interval structure; they do not dictate one emotion.
A chord progression is ordered harmonic movement. Its effect depends on where each chord sits relative to the tonal centre, how long it lasts, what the bass does, how voices move between chords and what the melody is doing above it.
Three harmonic jobs to hear first
Home / tonic
The harmony that feels most settled. Returning here can create arrival.
Departure / preparation
Harmony that moves away from home or prepares stronger tension.
Expectation / dominant pull
Harmony that creates a stronger tendency toward resolution. Delaying or redirecting that return can create useful tension.
These are tendencies, not laws. Genres use harmony differently, and many effective songs weaken or avoid traditional resolution.
Roman numerals make relationships portable
Roman numerals label chords by their position relative to a key or tonal centre. They let you describe harmonic relationships without tying them to one absolute key.

Chord names are only part of what you hear
Bass and inversions
The lowest note changes weight and direction. An inversion can make movement smoother or less final without replacing the underlying harmony.
Voice leading
Listen to individual notes between chords. Shared tones and small steps often create continuity; larger leaps create more obvious movement.
Harmonic rhythm
How often chords change matters. A progression may feel static because changes are too slow—or frantic because they are too frequent.
Voicing and register
The same chord can feel very different when its notes are spaced, doubled or placed in a different register.
Controlled harmony workflow
Freeze a short baseline
Use a verse, chorus or eight-bar section. Preserve the strongest melody, groove, tempo and instrumentation where possible.
Find home
Identify the strongest point of stability or arrival.
Name the audible problem
Examples: “the chords feel static,” “the return happens too early,” “the chorus never arrives,” or “the harmony distracts from the vocal.”
Identify the harmonic job
Is the problem about stability, departure, expectation, return, bass movement, voicing or harmonic rhythm?
Choose one variable
Test one chord substitution, delayed resolution, bass/inversion change, voicing change, voice-leading move or change in harmonic rhythm.
Predict the result
Write what you expect to hear before generating or editing.
A/B the revision
Compare against the baseline. Note unrelated model variation rather than crediting every difference to harmony.
Decide
Keep, revise or reject the change and record why.

AI limitation: notation is direction, not proof
AI music platforms vary in how precisely they follow chord names, Roman numerals, inversions or progression instructions. A system may also change melody, rhythm, arrangement or timbre at the same time. Treat harmonic language as a control input, then verify the rendered audio.
If exact harmony matters, compare the result against the progression or functional movement you intended. One prompt label is not evidence that the model followed it.
