If Suno keeps giving one singer all the lines, swapping vocal roles, or turning your duet into a muddy chorus, the fix is usually not “add more meta tags.” The better approach is to make the vocal roles easier to interpret, keep the first test simple, and repair only the section that fails.
First: what Suno actually guarantees
Suno supports custom lyrics, current Voices controls in v5.5, and section-level editing. But Suno does not document a guaranteed duet switch that locks Singer A and Singer B to specific lyric lines. Labels such as [Female], [Male], [Both], [Lead], or [Harmony] are best treated as steering cues, not hard commands.
The easiest duet pattern to stabilize
Start with alternating vocal roles. Do not begin with two different full sentences sung simultaneously. Give Suno a short section where each role is obvious, then add shared harmony only after the turn-taking works.

This is a practical test pattern, not an official Suno syntax guarantee. If one label is ignored, simplify before adding more instructions.
Use three layers instead of one giant prompt
Describe the overall vocal relationship: alternating duet, contrasting timbres, call-and-response, restrained harmony, shared chorus.
Keep the text singable. Use short role cues only where they help the model understand who should sing.
If one verse or chorus fails, replace that section instead of regenerating the entire song.
If the problem is not role assignment but keeping a recognizable singer across songs, you are solving a different problem: vocal identity.

Sometimes the duet problem starts before the vocal generation.
If the two voices do not have clearly different lyrical jobs, more singer labels will not fix the writing. Decide who reveals, who responds, where the conflict changes, and what the shared chorus actually resolves before asking the generator to assign voices.

When a duet fails, diagnose the symptom
Shorten the section, increase contrast between the two intended roles, and test a simpler alternating pattern.
Treat it as local drift. Repair the smallest failed section rather than changing the whole song.
This is a timbre/identity problem, not merely a lyric-label problem. Separate the vocal descriptions or use Suno's current voice tools where available.
Reduce lyric density. A short unison phrase, echo, held note, or compact response is easier to render than two simultaneous paragraphs.
If Suno is actually singing your instructions, use the lyric formatting guide. That is a formatting problem, not a duet problem.
Repair the part that failed
For Pro and Premier users, Suno documents Replace Section as a way to regenerate a selected part of a song and change lyrics inside that region. The Song Editor also supports section-level replacement and lyric edits. That makes a targeted repair much more sensible than repeatedly rebuilding a good song because one chorus assigned the voices badly.
- Keep the best overall generation.
- Identify the smallest section where the role assignment breaks.
- Simplify the duet cue inside that section.
- Replace the section and compare the new versions.

I need better control over the actual singer

A successful duet is one song. A recognizable creator or AI-artist voice requires decisions you can repeat: who the voice is for, what it should communicate, how it behaves, and how that identity stays coherent from track to track. If that is the problem you are actually trying to solve, move beyond isolated prompt fixes and build the voice deliberately.

Are [Female], [Male] and [Both] official guaranteed Suno commands?
No. Treat them as useful steering cues. Suno can interpret structured lyric cues, but they do not guarantee exact singer assignment.
Can I force two different voices to overlap perfectly?
Not reliably through labels alone. Start with short shared phrases, echoes, or simple harmony and build complexity only after the arrangement is stable.
Should I regenerate the whole song if one singer takes the wrong line?
Usually not. If the rest of the song works, section-level editing is the more controlled repair path.
What if I need the same singer across several songs?
