You Wrote the Lyrics. Now What? Songwriter Registration, Royalties & Memberships (2026)

You Wrote the Lyrics. Now What?

Songwriter registration, royalties and paid memberships explained for creators using Suno and other AI music tools. You do not have to play an instrument, sing, or compose the AI-generated melody to be the human author of original lyrics. But owning lyrics, formally registering copyright, receiving songwriting royalties and joining a professional association are different steps.

Short answer: Document and, where appropriate, register the lyrics you wrote. Choose one performance-rights organization (ASCAP or BMI), consider The MLC if you administer eligible U.S. streaming mechanical royalties yourself, and only pay for optional services when they provide useful feedback, contract review, or administration. None of these steps gives you automatic copyright in a fully AI-generated recording.

1. What does being a songwriter actually mean?

A lyricist writes the words. A composer writes the musical elements. Both are types of songwriters. You can accurately identify yourself as a lyricist or songwriter when you wrote original song lyrics, even if an AI system supplied the melody, instruments and vocals.

Layer of the song What the creator may control Where registration fits
Original human-written lyrics Copyright can protect the original words. Keep earlier drafts, dates and collaborator records. U.S. Copyright Office; identify the actual human-authored lyrics.
Suno-generated melody, instrumental and vocals Do not claim copyright in entirely AI-generated elements merely because you prompted, selected or paid for them. A lyric filing does not register the AI-generated music or sound recording.
Commercial use of the recording Permission depends on the applicable Suno terms, creation tier, downloads and third-party rights. An official copyright certificate does not replace a valid licence.
Songwriting income Eligible royalties may arise from performing and reproducing the human-authored musical work, even where the recording contains AI music. A PRO and possibly The MLC handle different royalty categories.

Government registration can provide meaningful enforcement advantages. The official Copyright Office application should truthfully describe the contribution, such as “lyrics”, and exclude or disclose AI-generated content when required. Do not describe the claim as Mary having composed the whole track. Read the free lyric copyright guide before paying a filing fee.

2. Which organizations should I join for free?

Organization Cost What it does—and what it doesn't
ASCAP or BMI Free songwriter affiliation Collect and distribute eligible public-performance royalties. Choose one organization as your songwriter PRO; don't join both in the same role. Both accept qualifying partially AI-generated works under their current policies.
The MLC Free For eligible self-administered songwriters, lyricists and publishers, collects U.S. digital audio mechanical royalties from covered services. If a publisher or administrator already collects for a work, avoid duplicate claims.
SoundExchange Free to register, if eligible Handles a different category: certain non-interactive digital sound-recording royalties. A human lyricist with AI-only vocals does not automatically qualify as a featured performer or sound-recording rightsholder.

Should I join ASCAP or BMI?

Either can be appropriate; compare account requirements and workflows rather than claiming one always pays more. BMI's AI policy expressly allows meaningful original human lyrics in an otherwise partially AI-generated work. ASCAP, BMI and SOCAN aligned their partial-AI registration policies in October 2025. Identify the human contributor honestly, and confirm that the actual work meets the society's registration requirements.

A self-administered songwriter should also understand the publisher share. ASCAP currently offers free writer affiliation, including a simultaneous writer-and-publisher application for eligible new applicants. A publisher account is a royalty administration arrangement—not an additional copyright in an AI melody. Read ASCAP's official guidance.

Why isn't The MLC the same thing as ASCAP or BMI?

PROs primarily administer public-performance rights. The MLC administers certain U.S. digital mechanical royalties. One song may have more than one relevant revenue stream; joining one organization doesn't replace the others. Distributor royalties for the recording are a separate matter again. See the full free registration and royalty guide.

3. What extra value does paying provide?

A professional membership is useful only if it adds a service you will actually use. Paying doesn't make AI-generated music copyrightable, prove infringement clearance, or guarantee royalties. Prices below are U.S. advertised rates checked in October 2026; always verify current terms before purchasing.

Paid option Advertised cost (USD) What you buy When it makes sense
Songwriters Guild of America — Gold $60 per year Professional songwriting feedback, access to a contract-review benefit, learning and member community. Check the current benefit limits. For someone seeking independent evaluation or preparing to discuss a licence or songwriter contract.
NSAI — annual $225 first year; $200 renewal Song evaluations, mentoring, learning library, and eligible pitch/feedback opportunities; service credits and terms apply. For a creator actively improving lyrics and developing songwriting relationships. No placement is guaranteed.
Songtrust — publishing administration $100 one-time per songwriter, plus 15% of performance royalties and 20% of non-performance royalties it collects Registers and administers eligible compositions with collection sources in multiple territories, without acquiring copyright ownership. For released works earning income or requiring international publishing administration. Confirm where the publisher share is already being collected.

If you are not yet releasing music or pitching songs, you may not need any paid membership. A free PRO account and a well-kept rights archive may be enough until the work generates activity.

4. Example: 52 human-written lyric sheets and Suno V5/V5.5 recordings

Imagine a U.S.-based creator with 52 original lyric sets, while Suno generated all melodies, vocals and sound recordings. Her goal is to protect her writing, be recognized as a songwriter, and keep spending reasonable.

  1. Inventory the 52 works: list song titles, earliest lyric draft dates, co-writers (if any), Suno version, paid/free plan history, any commercial licence evidence, release dates, and published/unpublished status.
  2. Prepare a government lyric claim: register human-authored lyrics only, not the AI music or masters. If all 52 qualify as unpublished works by the same author and claimant, the U.S. GRUW option can allow groups of up to 10 for $85 per group (six groups = $510). Do not assume this option if any work has already been legally published or if the filing cannot accurately accommodate the AI content.
  3. Join one PRO: ASCAP or BMI, free for eligible songwriter affiliation. Register eligible compositions accurately and retain any confirmation or identifiers.
  4. Use The MLC when needed: register eligible U.S. works only where the creator is self-administering those mechanical rights and not duplicating a publisher administrator.
  5. Evaluate one optional paid membership: SGA's $60 Gold membership can make sense if its current professional feedback and contract review are useful. Hold off on more expensive coaching or publishing administration until there is a clear goal or income.
  6. Do not buy a master-recording copyright filing solely because Suno generated a finished MP3. Human-authored performances or production may change the evaluation for another version.

Conditional example: If the 52 original lyric works actually qualify for six unpublished-work group registrations, the estimated filing expense is US$510. With a $60 optional annual SGA membership, the illustrative first-year government-and-membership total is US$570. This is not a quoted cost for all catalog histories; published works, different co-writers and application constraints can require different routes.

5. What about hundreds or thousands of songs?

The process should scale by eligible work and proven authorship, not by raw Suno generation count. Five hundred audio exports may represent fewer underlying lyric works. Keep a master register with separate records for each lyrical work, generated version, subscription history and publication status. Identify eligible batches before paying government filing fees or applying for a publishing administrator.
