Can I Delete and Re-Upload a Music Release Without Losing Streams?

AI Music Distribution Guide · Reviewed September 22, 2026

Direct answer: You can delete and re-upload, but do not assume the new upload will preserve the original store links, play counts or playlist history. Use an in-place edit whenever the needed field is editable.

What definitely changes

DistroKid says a re-uploaded release receives new store links. The original links do not simply become the links for the new release.

Spotify may link the tracks

Spotify says play counts can be retained through track-linking when the old and new audio and metadata match, including duration, title and artist name.

Before deleting anything, save

  • ISRC
  • UPC
  • Exact audio file
  • Artist, title and version metadata
  • Store links
  • Release date
  • Current playlist and stream evidence

When an edit is safer

DistroKid allows edits to many fields, including artist name, collaborators, album title, release date, artwork, song titles, version info and explicit tagging. If your problem fits an edit, fix it while the release remains live.

Frequently asked questions

Will my original Spotify link still work?

DistroKid says new uploads get new service links.

Can the Spotify play count survive?

Possibly through track-linking when audio and metadata match, but it is not automatic.

Should I reuse the ISRC?

If it is the same recording, preserve the recording identity. If the recording materially changed, review whether a new ISRC is required.
