Is Uber worth considering for extra income?

It can be—especially if what you need is flexibility rather than another fixed shift. Uber lets eligible delivery people choose when to go online, and in many Canadian markets delivery can be done by car, bike, scooter or, where available, on foot. Passenger driving is a separate option with stricter vehicle and licensing requirements.

The important question is not simply “How much did the app pay me?” It is how much did I keep after the time and costs required to earn it? Fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, parking, mobile service and taxes can all affect the result.

Do not spend thousands of dollars chasing a CA$200 earnings guarantee. The offer is best viewed as a reason to test an opportunity you were already considering—not as a reason to take on major new costs.

What the CA$200 / 25-delivery offer actually means

The wording matters. Uber's Canadian guarantee terms describe this type of promotion as a minimum guarantee. Eligible delivery and shopping fees, plus certain amounts such as Surge, count toward the calculation; tips, gratuities, sales taxes and some incentives do not. If eligible earnings are below the guarantee after completing the required eligible deliveries in time, Uber says it adds the difference. Canceled deliveries do not count.

For example, if an eligible person completed the required deliveries and Uber calculated CA$170 in earnings that count toward a CA$200 guarantee, the guarantee mechanism would add CA$30. That is different from receiving an extra CA$200 on top of CA$170.

• Next 10: test different periods or areas and note waiting time and distance.

After 25, review your total earnings, promotion outcome, expenses and total hours. That tells you far more than a headline claiming a particular hourly rate.

Insurance: check before your first car delivery

Uber maintains commercial auto insurance for covered delivery activity in Canada, but the details vary by province and by whether you are offline, available in the app, have accepted a request or are completing it. Uber also states that you remain responsible for maintaining personal auto insurance for personal use.

Tell your insurance broker or provider that you plan to participate in delivery or rideshare activity. Do not assume platform coverage makes your personal policy irrelevant. In Quebec, for example, Uber publishes province-specific delivery coverage through Economical; other provinces have different limits and conditions.

The Canada Revenue Agency treats independent delivery-app drivers as self-employed contractors with tax obligations. Delivery income—including tips—must be reported. Eligible business expenses may be deductible when properly supported.

There is an important distinction between delivery-only work and commercial passenger ridesharing. CRA says delivery-only drivers generally register for GST/HST once they exceed the small-supplier threshold of CA$30,000 over four calendar quarters, although voluntary registration can be possible. Commercial rideshare drivers have different GST/HST rules and generally must register when they begin earning from commercial ridesharing.
