Use AI to Find the Story Hidden Inside Rough Notes

Use AI to Find the Story Hidden Inside Rough Notes

AI Writing Assistance · Editing & Judgment · Public Lesson 21

This block is about using AI without outsourcing editorial judgment: diagnose the problem first, make the decision visible, then edit.

Messy notes are not a failed draft. They are often raw material with a story, argument or emotional thread already inside them.

The Jack Righteous approach

Use AI to surface patterns before it starts composing sentences.

Use this workflow

  1. Paste the notes without cleaning them first.
  2. Ask AI to group related ideas, examples and tensions.
  3. Look for repeated claims, images, questions or emotional moments.
  4. Separate the strongest thread from side ideas that deserve their own piece.
  5. Build the outline only after you approve the pattern.

Why this matters

AI can make a draft look finished before the underlying problem is solved. If the issue is meaning, structure or evidence, a smoother sentence may actually make the problem harder to see. Diagnose first. Then choose the lightest intervention that fixes the real issue.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

Organize these rough notes into possible themes, tensions and story threads. Do not write the article. Show me what repeats, what appears important, what conflicts, and what may be a side path. I will choose the direction.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should make the editorial decision more visible. It should tell you what changed, what is uncertain, what needs evidence and what still requires judgment. The goal is not a prettier draft at any cost. The goal is a better-controlled draft.

Your five-minute exercise

The idea that appears most often is: ______________________________

The example with the most energy is: ______________________________

The side path I can remove is: ______________________________

The likely core message is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can identify patterns, gaps, possible objections and revision options. You still decide what is true, what is fair, what is strong enough to publish, what deserves qualification, and which version actually represents your position.

Jack Righteous principle: Better AI writing does not come from surrendering judgment. It comes from making the right decisions easier to see.
