Ask AI What Your Draft Is Actually About

AI Writing Assistance · Editing & Judgment · Public Lesson 22

This block is about using AI without outsourcing editorial judgment: diagnose the problem first, make the decision visible, then edit.

Writers can spend so long inside a draft that they stop seeing the difference between the topic and the point.

The Jack Righteous approach

Use AI as a mirror: ask it to explain the message back to you before you ask it to improve anything.

Use this workflow

  1. Give AI the current draft without new framing.
  2. Ask for the central claim in one sentence.
  3. Ask what the reader is most likely to remember.
  4. Ask which examples actually support the claim.
  5. Identify sections that appear to argue something else.

Why this matters

AI can make a draft look finished before the underlying problem is solved. If the issue is meaning, structure or evidence, a smoother sentence may actually make the problem harder to see. Diagnose first. Then choose the lightest intervention that fixes the real issue.

A prompt you can actually use

Copy and adapt:

Read this draft as a careful editor. Tell me what you think it is actually saying, what the reader is likely to remember, what supports the central claim, and where the draft changes subjects or weakens its own point. Do not rewrite it.

What a useful AI response should do

A useful response should make the editorial decision more visible. It should tell you what changed, what is uncertain, what needs evidence and what still requires judgment. The goal is not a prettier draft at any cost. The goal is a better-controlled draft.

Your five-minute exercise

The draft appears to be about: ______________________________

The point I actually want is: ______________________________

The section that best supports it is: ______________________________

The section that drifts is: ______________________________

What the human still decides

AI can identify patterns, gaps, possible objections and revision options. You still decide what is true, what is fair, what is strong enough to publish, what deserves qualification, and which version actually represents your position.

Jack Righteous principle: Better AI writing does not come from surrendering judgment. It comes from making the right decisions easier to see.
