Direct answer: Use the pause method that matches the model. Eleven v3 uses punctuation and audio-tag prompting; Multilingual v2 and Flash v2/v2.5 support SSML break tags. Too many forced breaks can destabilize the output.
Do not use the same pause syntax for every model
Eleven v3 does not support SSML break tags. For v3, use punctuation and the prompting methods designed for v3.
For Multilingual v2 and Flash, break tags can be precise
ElevenLabs documents <break time="1.5s" /> for natural pauses up to about three seconds on Multilingual v2, Flash v2 and Flash v2.5.
Too many breaks can create new problems
ElevenLabs warns that excessive break tags can cause speed changes, noise or artifacts. Use them only where the listener needs a real beat.
Punctuation still matters
Dashes, em dashes and ellipses can influence cadence, but they are less exact. An ellipsis can also imply hesitation, which may be wrong for the scene.
Repair the smallest section
If one paragraph has a timing problem, isolate that paragraph. Do not regenerate a whole approved narration because one pause is wrong.
