How to Make ElevenLabs Read Acronyms, Initials, Numbers and Brand Names Correctly

Direct answer: Write for the sound you want, not the typography you started with. Test the term alone, decide whether it should be spoken as a word or individual letters, then use a pronunciation alias/dictionary or explicit written form.
Decide: word, initials or expanded phrase?
NASA, JR, URL and 2026 are not the same pronunciation problem. First decide exactly what the listener should hear.
Use aliases for practical substitutions
ElevenLabs pronunciation dictionaries support alias-style substitutions when phoneme control is not available or not appropriate. That lets you replace a written term with a spelling or phrase that produces the desired sound.
Watch numbers on low-latency models
ElevenLabs notes that Flash v2.5 does not normalize numbers by default the same way you may expect. Phone numbers, dates and currencies can be affected. For important spoken numbers, write them in the form you want heard.
Test the ugly version if it sounds better
Your production script does not have to look elegant. If “J R” produces the correct initials and “JR” does not, use the form that delivers the right audio.
Create a project pronunciation list
Before a long narration, list every brand, person, place, acronym and unusual number format. Fix those once, then apply the same solution throughout the project.

Frequently asked questions
Why does ElevenLabs read an acronym as a word?
Because the model interprets the written form. Spell out letters or use an alias when you need a specific reading.
Why are phone numbers or dates weird in Flash v2.5?
ElevenLabs says text normalization is disabled by default in Flash v2.5 for latency, which can affect numbers.
Can I use a pronunciation dictionary for brand names?
Yes. Dictionaries and aliases are designed for names, places, technical terms and custom pronunciation.
