SELF-PUBLISHING INTELLIGENCE · SP05 · DEVELOP
Develop the Book—Not Just the Chapters.
SP04 helps you produce and control the draft unit by unit. SP05 asks a harder question: does the manuscript actually work as one complete book?
This is where structure, progression, pacing, repetition, missing material, chapter ownership, character or argument movement, and reader payoff are judged across the whole manuscript. Sentence polish comes later.
Start with the right manuscript state
Enter SP05 only when the draft is complete enough to read from beginning to end and the major SP04 source, continuity, voice, and provenance flags remain visible. A story bible, outline, research archive, or collection of polished chapters is not automatically a developmental manuscript.
Developmental editing protects the book, not the draft
A strong developmental pass is allowed to move a great scene, cut attractive prose, merge two competent chapters, expand an underbuilt section, reopen the architecture, or challenge an ending that does not pay off the book’s promise.
The goal is not to prove how much work has already been done. The goal is to make sure the work functions for the intended reader.
Does the complete manuscript deliver what SP02 promised?
Can the story, argument, transformation, learning path, or governing life lens still be stated clearly?
Does the beginning create the correct contract—and does the ending earn its payoff?
Does every major unit move the reader somewhere new rather than restart the same idea?
Where does the book drag, rush, over-explain, under-build, or spend too much space on low-value material?
Are recurring ideas deepened intentionally—or simply repeated because no chapter owns them?
Give every major idea an owner
One of the fastest ways for a manuscript to feel AI-expanded is for the same thesis, framework, warning, emotional point, or signature phrase to be explained again and again. SP05 assigns each major concept a definitive home.
For every important idea, decide where it is first set up, where it receives its deepest explanation, and where it returns later as application, consequence, contrast, or payoff. Earlier references should foreshadow. Later references should use the established idea rather than redefine it.
Diagnose before you polish
Read the manuscript as a whole before spending serious time on line edits. Record first-pass reactions before solving them. Then diagnose the book at two levels:
- Whole-book level: reader promise, spine, opening, ending, progression, pacing, balance, voice, evidence placement, and book-type function.
- Unit level: what each chapter, scene, lesson, spread, or section must accomplish; whether it still belongs; what should be expanded, compressed, moved, merged, split, rebuilt, or removed.
Do not polish a paragraph you may still delete.
Length is not the quality target
A target word count can be useful for format and market planning, but it cannot tell you whether a book is complete. Add material only when the reader needs more story, argument, evidence, example, consequence, practice, reflection, or support. Cut material when repetition, setup, explanation, or low-value content delays the book.
A 90,000-word manuscript can be underdeveloped. A 50,000-word manuscript can be complete. Development decides by function—not by flattering the number.
Choose the development branch that matches the book
Fiction & Narrative
Test causality, character movement, scene necessity, escalation, revelation timing, subplot function, climax, thematic progression, and whether the ending is earned.
Nonfiction & Argument
Test thesis progression, chapter ownership, proof burden, counterargument, case-study use, consequence, explanation depth, and whether each part genuinely changes the reader’s mental model.
Memoir & Biography
Test the governing lens, chronology, scene selection, reflection, source confidence, emotional progression, repetition, and whether unknown motives or memories have been converted into false certainty.
How-To & Educational
Test the learning sequence, prerequisites, examples, practice, failure modes, diagnostics, revision opportunities, artifacts, and transfer beyond the provided example.
Children’s & Illustrated
Test page/spread progression, read-aloud flow, age fit, page turns, word density, text-image division of labor, visual continuity, and whether every limited page earns its place.
Hybrid & Experimental
Test whether every form has a reader-facing reason to exist, whether transitions are legible, and whether novelty creates meaning rather than hiding weak substance.
Build the revision plan in the right order
- Structure: resolve P0 architecture, order, unit ownership, missing major material, merge/split/remove decisions.
- Progression & pacing: improve reader movement, escalation, learning sequence, scene density, chapter weight, and transitions.
- Repetition & ownership: cut duplicate explanations and assign major ideas definitive locations.
- Depth: add only the highest-value missing scenes, cases, counterarguments, examples, consequences, exercises, or reflection.
- Continuity: reconcile chronology, terminology, character facts, framework labels, examples, and cross-references.
- Evidence placement: make surviving claims, memories, quotations, and source-dependent passages easy to hand into SP06.
- Authorial read: read the assembled manuscript again as one book before development closes.
Use outside readers with a job
Beta and technical readers are most useful when you know what evidence you need from them. A target reader may reveal confusion or boredom. A technical reader may find domain errors. A lived-experience reader may identify blind spots. A cold reader may expose context the author assumed was obvious.
Feedback is evidence, not a command. Repeated confusion from the intended audience deserves more weight than one person’s taste.
SP05 developmental verdict
Do not close development until you can choose the actual state:
NOT READY FOR DEVELOPMENT CLOSE — major structural problems or missing core material remain.
DEVELOPMENT IN PROGRESS — whole-book diagnosis exists, but substantive revision is active.
CONDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMPLETE — the book works structurally, but named author/source/beta issues remain.
DEVELOPMENT COMPLETE — the manuscript functions as a coherent book. Remaining work is verification, author-approved sentence-level editing, and production—not another hidden rewrite.
Your completion artifact
Maintain a Developmental Manuscript Diagnostic & Revision Ledger containing the whole-book diagnostic, idea ownership map, unit ledger, structural change control, pacing audit, repetition/continuity pass, gap audit, revision plan, reader feedback, developmental verdict, and SP06 handoff.
The manuscript itself should now be a Developmental Manuscript: stable enough that formal verification can work against a known version.
Next: verify what survives development
SP05 decides what belongs in the book. SP06 verifies the surviving facts, sources, quotations, permissions, rights, originality, and provenance. Do not waste publication-level verification on material you still expect to cut.
