Using Suno AI’s In-Song Editor (v4.5): A Practical Guide for Creators

By Jack Righteousjackrighteous.com

Suno AI’s in-song editor, introduced in version 4 and refined through v4.5, allows creators to modify songs directly inside the platform—without exporting to external software. This guide explains how each editor function works, when to use it, and where creators should proceed carefully.

Overview: What Is the In-Song Editor?

The in-song editor is a set of post-generation tools that let you refine an existing Suno song without starting over. In v4.5, the editor includes:

  • Replace Section – Regenerate a specific part of a song
  • Extend – Add new musical sections
  • Crop – Remove unwanted audio
  • Fade Out – Smooth endings using prompt tags
  • Edit Displayed Lyrics – Clean up visible lyric metadata

Replace Section

Replace Section allows you to regenerate a selected portion of a track while preserving the rest. Suno uses surrounding context to blend the new audio into the existing song.

  • Edit lyrics or adjust the style prompt for the selected segment
  • Generate two AI variations
  • The chosen version is inserted automatically

This is commonly used to fix weak verses, correct phrasing issues, or adjust tone without affecting the full song.

Extend (Song Extension)

Extend lets you grow a track by adding new material such as verses, choruses, bridges, or outros.

  • Provide new lyrics and a style prompt
  • Suno generates an additional section as a continuation
  • The new audio is merged with the original

Extend is best used before heavy fine-tuning. Many creators extend first, then refine with Replace Section.

Crop Tool

Crop allows you to trim a song by selecting a waveform range.

  • Remove long intros or empty endings
  • Isolate a verse or hook
  • Create previews or short-form clips

Cropping does not regenerate audio; it only removes portions of the existing file.

Fade Out (Prompt Tags)

Fade-outs are controlled through prompt tags rather than a slider.

Recommended usage:

[fade] final lyric line
[end]

Using [fade] without [end] may result in abrupt or incomplete endings.

Edit Displayed Lyrics

This feature controls the lyrics shown publicly on the song page. It does not change the audio.

  • Fix transcription errors
  • Remove duplicated lines
  • Clean up titles or formatting

Creators typically use this as a final polish step before sharing or exporting.

How the Editor Works Technically

  • Replace and Extend maintain musical context on both sides of the edit
  • Maximum generation time per edit is approximately 3 minutes
  • Available on desktop for Pro and Premier plans
  • Each edit creates a new version; originals remain unchanged

Using the Editor with Remasters and Covers

With Remasters

  • Editing a remastered version often improves consistency
  • Minor vocal or tonal shifts may still occur
  • Replace Section is commonly used to fix remaster artifacts

With Covers

  • The editor functions normally, but melody has already changed
  • Replacing sections may alter phrasing
  • Extensions follow the Cover’s style, not the original track

Known Limitations

  • Replaced sections may feel mismatched in tone
  • Extend may fail or shift style unexpectedly
  • Cover songs may truncate around the 3-minute mark
  • Some older artifacts can persist after remastering

Practical Tips

  • Use Extend first, Replace second
  • Always pair [fade] with [end]
  • Edit displayed lyrics last
  • Phonetic spelling can help guide pronunciation

What to Try Next

  • Replace a weak verse in an existing song
  • Extend a remastered track with a new outro
  • Refine a chorus in a Cover version
