Shopify WhatsApp Marketing 2026: How Shopify Messaging Works for Creators

Updated September 2026. Shopify has expanded its marketing stack again. Shopify Messaging—formerly Shopify Email—now brings email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing into the same Shopify marketing environment.

Fast answer: WhatsApp can now become another direct marketing channel for eligible Shopify merchants, but it is not simply “email in a chat app.” You need explicit WhatsApp consent, a connected WhatsApp Business Account, Meta-approved campaign templates, and a reason to message people that is useful enough to protect your sender reputation.

For independent creators, the bigger lesson is not “start blasting WhatsApp.” It is this: owned audience does not mean one channel. It means keeping the customer relationship, consent and next step attached to a system you control.

What Changed With Shopify Messaging?

Shopify Email has evolved into Shopify Messaging. The product now supports marketing campaigns across email, SMS and WhatsApp from Shopify admin. That gives merchants a more unified way to reach customers without treating every communication channel as a completely separate system.

For creators, that matters because the workflow can now connect audience capture, customer data, segmentation, campaign delivery and the destination you want people to reach next.

Discovery or useful content → consent → customer/segment data → right channel → useful message → product, resource or owned destination

The channel is only one part of the system. The message still needs context, and the destination still needs to be worth reaching.

What Shopify WhatsApp Campaigns Can Do

Shopify currently provides WhatsApp campaign templates for use cases such as back-in-stock messages, upcoming sales, product showcases, VIP offers and blank campaigns you can adapt to your own purpose.

A campaign can include text, imagery or product-focused headers, and calls to action such as:

  • Open a custom URL
  • Call a phone number
  • Copy or use a discount code
  • Send a quick reply

You can test a campaign before sending it and schedule it for later. Shopify also supports keyword replies so customers can trigger predefined responses from your WhatsApp business account.

Creator example: You release a new digital guide or music resource. A subscriber who explicitly opted into WhatsApp receives one concise message with the resource, a reason it matters, and one button to open it. That is much stronger than turning WhatsApp into another generic broadcast feed.

The Critical Requirement: WhatsApp Consent Is Separate

Do not assume that an email subscriber is automatically a WhatsApp subscriber.

Shopify requires explicit WhatsApp marketing consent before you send promotional WhatsApp messages. Shopify can collect WhatsApp marketing consent during checkout, and merchants can also bring in eligible existing subscribers when the required consent already exists.

This is an important distinction from simply having a customer’s phone number. A phone number in the customer record is not the same thing as permission to market through WhatsApp.

If you already use Shopify Forms, keep using Forms to capture intent, source and segmentation. Treat WhatsApp consent as its own permission layer and preserve exactly how the customer entered that channel.

Meta Still Controls the WhatsApp Messaging Layer

To use the Shopify integration, you connect or create a WhatsApp Business Account through Meta. Marketing templates are submitted to Meta for approval before they can be used, and Shopify says approval can take up to 24 hours.

Meta also evaluates messaging quality. Blocks, reports and low-quality sending behavior can hurt sender reputation and may reduce how many marketing conversations you can initiate.

That makes restraint part of the marketing strategy. A larger send volume is not automatically a better result.

Canada vs. United States: A Major 2026 Difference

For Canadian creators: Canada is currently a supported destination for Shopify WhatsApp marketing. Shopify’s current pricing page lists WhatsApp marketing messages to Canada at $0.050 USD per message. Pricing can change, so verify the live Shopify rate before budgeting a campaign.

There is also a major regional limitation: Shopify currently states that merchants cannot send WhatsApp marketing messages to customers in the United States.

That means a creator with both Canadian and U.S. subscribers should not design a communication plan that assumes WhatsApp can reach the whole audience. Email remains a much more broadly available owned channel, with SMS and WhatsApp used only where they fit the customer, permission and region.

WhatsApp Is Not a Replacement for Email

Email is still useful for depth: newsletters, longer explanations, receipts, sequences, education and content that someone may want to save or revisit.

WhatsApp is better treated as a high-attention channel. That makes it useful for concise, timely communication, but also easier to abuse.

Channel Best role Main caution
Email Depth, newsletters, education, longer sequences Inbox competition and deliverability
SMS Short urgent or time-sensitive communication Permission, cost and message fatigue
WhatsApp High-attention, concise campaigns and direct responses Explicit consent, Meta rules, reputation and regional limits

The better question is not “Which channel wins?” It is “What job should each channel do?”

A Practical Creator Workflow

  1. Start with a real reason to communicate. A release, useful resource, launch, reminder, back-in-stock item, deadline or other clear event.
  2. Capture permission correctly. Keep email, SMS and WhatsApp consent distinct.
  3. Preserve intent. Use source tags, customer data and segments so you know why the person joined.
  4. Choose the right channel. Do not send the same campaign everywhere simply because you can.
  5. Send one clear message. One purpose, one useful next step.
  6. Route to an owned destination. A product, guide, project page, account, download, booking path or other relevant continuation point.
  7. Measure behavior. Did people open, click, reply, purchase, unsubscribe, block or ignore?
  8. Adjust the next send. The evidence should change what you do next.
Permission → context → channel → message → destination → evidence → next decision

Where Shopify Forms Fits

Shopify Forms remains one of the strongest first-party data tools in the Shopify stack because it can capture the reason someone entered your ecosystem, apply tags and help build customer segments.

WhatsApp does not replace that layer. It adds another possible delivery channel after permission exists.

If you are still treating every signup as one generic newsletter subscriber, start by fixing the capture and segmentation layer before adding more ways to send messages.

Where Campaign Autopilot Fits

Shopify is also adding AI-assisted campaign tools. My earlier look at Shopify Campaign Autopilot focused on what happens when Shopify uses store context to help prepare marketing work.

WhatsApp expands the distribution side of that larger picture. AI can help prepare campaigns, but the merchant still needs to decide who should receive the message, through which channel, and why.

Where Social Platforms Fit

Social media still has an important discovery role. But discovery and relationship ownership are different jobs.

My creator campaign guide uses a simple principle: do not turn every platform into a full-time job. Give each platform a role and make sure attention has somewhere intentional to continue.

Shopify Messaging fits that model because email, SMS and WhatsApp can become continuation channels after someone has chosen to enter your owned system.

What I Would Do Before Sending a First WhatsApp Campaign

  • Confirm Shopify Messaging and WhatsApp are available for your store.
  • Connect or create the correct WhatsApp Business Account.
  • Review Meta and Shopify WhatsApp marketing policies.
  • Confirm exactly how WhatsApp consent was collected.
  • Start with a small, high-intent segment.
  • Choose one useful campaign purpose.
  • Create the template early enough for Meta approval.
  • Send a test message.
  • Check current per-message pricing for your customer countries.
  • Watch replies, clicks, unsubscribes, blocks and complaints.

FAQ

Did Shopify Email get replaced?

Shopify’s marketing product has expanded under the Shopify Messaging name. Email remains part of it, alongside SMS and WhatsApp capabilities.

Can I message every Shopify customer on WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp marketing requires explicit consent and is also subject to regional and Meta platform restrictions.

Can I send Shopify WhatsApp marketing to U.S. customers?

Not currently. Shopify’s present documentation says WhatsApp marketing messages cannot be sent to customers in the United States.

Can I send Shopify WhatsApp marketing to customers in Canada?

Canada is currently supported. Shopify’s current pricing documentation lists Canadian WhatsApp marketing messages at $0.050 USD per message, but always check the live rate before launching a campaign.

Should creators stop using email and move to WhatsApp?

No. Use the channels for different jobs. Email remains useful for depth and broad reach; WhatsApp can be useful when you have explicit permission and a concise, high-value reason to message someone.
