The governing question
What happens when deliverance keeps coming but character, institutions and covenant responsibility keep collapsing?
Judges repeatedly demonstrates that winning the next battle is not the same thing as building a righteous society. Charismatic deliverers can rescue Israel and still fail personally. Tribes can unite against an atrocity and then commit new atrocities trying to repair the damage. A society can desperately need order while still being vulnerable to abusive centralized power.
Ruth provides the parallel family bridge: a story from the judges era in which ordinary loyalty and responsibility eventually lead to Obed, Jesse and David.
Next political authority bridge: Samuel & Saul—Samuel’s prophetic leadership, Israel’s demand for a king, the warnings about monarchy, Saul’s rise and fall, and the arrival of David.
Act II authority is now live: King David begins the next era by asking what happens when courage, calling and political power occupy the same person.
