Before you stretch an AI-generated song, answer a harder question: is the tempo actually wrong—or does the track only feel too slow, rushed or flat?

Tempo editing can rescue a strong generation that is slightly off. It can also damage a good vocal, cymbal decay, stereo image or groove when the real problem is arrangement, lyric density or the source generation itself.

Tempo and perceived pace are not the same thing

The BPM is genuinely wrong

The whole song feels consistently too slow or too fast, and the musical relationships still work when you audition it at a different playback rate. A tempo adjustment may be appropriate.

The vocal feels rushed

The BPM may be fine. Dense lyrics, short line breaks, crowded syllables or an overly busy arrangement can make one section feel hurried without the entire song needing a tempo change.

The track feels flat

Energy is not just BPM. Drum subdivision, syncopation, bass movement, section contrast and arrangement density can make two songs at the same tempo feel completely different.

Only one section drags

A global tempo change is probably too blunt. Repair the section, edit the arrangement or use a local timing change only if the audio survives it cleanly.

Start here: if changing the whole song's speed would solve one problem but create three new ones, tempo is probably not the root issue.

What each option actually does

Change Tempo

Changes duration and tempo while attempting to preserve pitch. This is usually the first permanent tool to test when the song is fundamentally right but the whole performance needs to move a little faster or slower.

Change Speed and Pitch

Changes playback speed and pitch together, more like speeding up or slowing down a record or tape. Use it when that linked tonal shift is part of the result you actually want.

Change Pitch

Changes pitch while preserving tempo. This is a different problem from pacing and should not be used just because a vocal feels too slow or too fast.

Clip Pitch and Speed

Useful when you need clip-level control rather than processing an entire selection. Audacity can change clip pitch and speed independently from the clip context menu.

Sliding Stretch

Designed for changes that evolve over time rather than one fixed percentage across the whole selection. It can create continuous tempo and/or pitch movement.

Play-at-Speed

Use this to answer, “Would this song work better a little faster?” before rendering anything. It changes playback for auditioning; your normal export is not automatically changed to that audition speed.

A safer workflow for changing an AI track's tempo

Keep the original. Duplicate the track or save a separate project version before time-stretching. You need a clean A/B reference.
Diagnose the scope. Is the entire song wrong, or only the verse, intro, bridge or vocal phrasing? Do not process three minutes of audio to solve a ten-second problem.
Audition first. Use playback-speed testing to hear whether faster or slower actually improves the song before committing a destructive change.
Test a representative excerpt. Choose audio containing vocals, drums, cymbals, sustained notes and ambience—not just an easy instrumental gap.
Make one controlled change. There is no universal “best” percentage for AI music. Move only as far as the song needs, then listen before pushing farther.
Listen for damage, not just improved pace. Check consonants, sibilance, kick and snare attacks, cymbal texture, bass definition, stereo width, reverb tails and vocal naturalness.
Compare at matched listening level. Faster or brighter playback can seem more exciting simply because the presentation changed. Judge musical improvement, not novelty.
Stop when the repair costs more than it saves. If the stretch makes the source obviously processed, reduce the amount, work locally or regenerate the problem upstream.

Why large tempo changes become risky

Pitch-preserving time stretching has to reconstruct audio rather than simply play the waveform faster. The farther you move from the original timing, the more likely you are to hear processing artifacts or unnatural texture. Audacity itself warns that large Change Tempo adjustments can sound strange.

That does not mean “never change tempo.” It means use the smallest change that fixes the actual problem and judge the result with your ears.

Watch the stereo image when time-stretching

Stereo AI renders can contain very different information in the left and right channels. Audacity notes that time-stretching stereo clips can sometimes affect stereo separation, particularly when the channels do not share much common material.

If a stretched track suddenly feels narrower, unstable or oddly shifted, compare against the original before assuming the new version is better just because the pacing improved.

When Audacity is the wrong place to fix the problem

The groove is wrong

If the drums, subdivision or rhythmic feel are fundamentally wrong, changing tempo only makes the wrong groove happen faster or slower.

The vocal phrasing is wrong

If words are rushed, skipped or crammed together, fix lyric density, phrasing or the generated section rather than stretching the entire mix.

The arrangement has no momentum

A flat verse-to-chorus transition is an arrangement problem. Tempo cannot create contrast that is missing from the composition.

The required change is extreme

If the only way to save the song is a major global stretch that creates obvious artifacts, the stronger move is often a new generation or a more targeted reconstruction.

Downstream editing is best used as refinement. It should preserve a valuable performance—not become a way to force a fundamentally wrong generation into shape.

After the pacing is right

Do not confuse timing repair with finishing. Once the song's pace works, continue through your actual finishing decisions: obvious repair, cleanup only where needed, tonal/mix work, mastering, loudness checks and export.
