A Limiter Should Control Peaks—Not Hide an Unfinished Mix
A limiter prevents signal peaks from exceeding a chosen ceiling by applying gain reduction when necessary. It can help prepare a finished mix for delivery, but pushing harder also changes transient shape, low-end behavior, movement and perceived loudness. The job is controlled peak management, not maximum loudness at any cost.
Limiter vs compression vs normalization

Essential controls
Input / drive
How strongly the signal is pushed into the limiter. More drive usually means more gain reduction and more audible change.
Ceiling / output
The maximum output target the limiter is asked to respect. The appropriate value depends on the actual delivery path and current specification—not one universal internet number.
Gain reduction
How much level the limiter is removing over time. Treat this as evidence; the same amount can sound acceptable in one track and destructive in another.
True-peak mode / measurement
Where supported, true-peak estimation helps identify reconstructed peaks that may exceed ordinary sample-peak readings after conversion or playback processing.
The JR limiter decision loop
- Save the approved pre-limiter mix/master.
- Define the destination/job. Release master, video, demo, client delivery or another specific use.
- Verify the mix-bus chain first. #96 should already be stable.
- Choose a ceiling based on the real destination requirement. If none exists yet, preserve sensible margin rather than pretending one fixed value is mandatory.
- Increase limiting only enough to solve the peak/loudness job.
- Watch gain reduction and listen to the exact moments where it works hardest.
- Level-match before/after when judging quality. The limited version will often be louder.
- Check transients, low end, vocal clarity, stereo image and section movement.
- Check true-peak evidence where the delivery path makes it relevant.
- Stop, reduce or return upstream when damage appears.
What limiter damage sounds like

True peak is evidence, not mythology
Sample peaks describe the stored samples. True-peak estimation attempts to predict peaks that can occur between samples when the signal is reconstructed. This matters in some delivery and encoding paths, but exact requirements vary. Do not master to a remembered streaming number
Streaming and delivery platforms can normalize playback, change codecs and update specifications. A loudness or true-peak guideline can be a useful delivery constraint, but it is not a production-quality score. Build the best controlled master for the job, then verify current destination requirements.
