How to Compare an AI Song to a Reference Track: Producer Correction Brief

Your AI track may have the requested genre label, approximate tempo and instrument list—and still feel wrong beside the recording that inspired the direction.
The reference may have a relaxed pocket while yours feels stiff. Its lead vocal may leave space while yours crowds every bar. Its chorus may become wider and more communal while yours simply becomes louder. Its bass may anchor the groove while yours overwhelms the vocal.
This lesson is not about forcing the new track to copy the master recording. It is about finding the production and performance gaps that stop the new song from competing in the same lane.

1. Prepare a Fair Comparison
Known recorded benchmark
Use the commercial recording as a listening and professional-quality benchmark. Streaming or listening access does not automatically grant permission to upload it to another service, separate its stems, redistribute it or reuse extracted elements.
Your own AI-generated track
This is the file you can inspect, edit, stem-separate and revise. Save the exact version, prompt, lyrics, platform model and generation date.
Level-match before judging
A louder recording often appears more exciting, clearer and more detailed. Reduce playback levels until both tracks feel approximately equal in loudness before comparing punch, tone, vocal presence, width or chorus impact.
Examples: reggae credibility, vocal authority, chorus lift, low-end control or final-section payoff.
Rights and source record
Record the benchmark title, where it was accessed, whether it is listening-only, the AI output ID and whether every processed file is owned or authorized. Suno’s official Audio Upload workflow requires the user to confirm ownership of uploaded material.
2. The Small Free-Tool Kit
Use tools only when they answer a defined question.

Use waveform, spectrogram and timed annotations to mark section starts, transitions, reductions, final peaks and visible frequency expansion. It helps answer when the recording changes—not why it is automatically better.

1. Genre credibility
- Does the rhythm actually behave like the intended genre?
- Are the core instruments performing the expected roles?
- Has the generator drifted into generic pop, cinematic or EDM habits?
- Which two genre markers are missing?
2. Tempo and groove
- Is the approximate BPM suitable?
- Does the track feel rushed, sluggish, stiff or overly busy?
- Is the benchmark heard in half-time or double-time?
- Does movement come from percussion, bass, subdivision or syncopation?
3. Vocal suitability
- Is the register right?
- Is the delivery too theatrical, polished, aggressive, soft or crowded?
- Do phrases leave enough room for the groove?
- Are backing vocals strengthening or confusing the genre?
- Does the voice remain a category rather than an imitation?
4. Arrangement and chorus impact
- Does the chorus genuinely change the experience?
- Is the AI result already at maximum density in the intro?
- Does the benchmark remove something before it expands?
- Are new voices, percussion, harmony, width or counter-lines introduced meaningfully?
5. Tonal and mix balance
- Is the bass too large, too weak or poorly centred?
- Is the lead vocal protected from competing mids?
- Does the chorus become brighter or only louder?
- Does width change by section?
- Is low-mid buildup making the AI result cloudy?
6. Original-song check
- Is the new chorus unmistakably its own?
- Is any melody, hook rhythm, riff or vocal identity recognizably close?
- Would the song still make sense if the benchmark disappeared?
- Does the new work have its own subject, point of view and ending?
4. The Seven-Pass Comparison
Pass 1 — Define the gap
Write one question. Do not begin with meters. Example: “Why does my chorus feel smaller even when it is louder?”
Pass 2 — Map both arrangements

Pass 3 — Compare tempo and groove
Estimate BPM, then describe pocket, swing, syncopation, subdivision, kick/bass relationship and percussion density. A correct BPM with the wrong groove is still a miss.
Pass 4 — Compare vocal and instrumental roles
Map when the lead is intimate or projected, where responses enter, which instruments retreat under important lines and which layers carry weight, motion, atmosphere or transition.
Pass 5 — Compare energy and loudness
Level-match first. Then compare section energy, short-term loudness and density. Determine whether the benchmark’s lift comes from level, width, harmony, brightness, rhythm or contrast.

Inspect broad low, low-mid, mid, upper-mid and high-frequency relationships. Ask what changed audibly and what production decision may explain it. Use “likely” rather than pretending an analyzer reveals the producer’s exact intention.

D. Regeneration Instructions
Keep the lyrical premise and original hook words. Regenerate with a relaxed midtempo reggae pocket, centred bass and syncopated hand percussion; remove the busy four-on-the-floor kick. Use a low, rough male baritone with short conversational phrases and clear pauses. Keep Verse 1 sparse. Add female responses only in the chorus. Drop bass and percussion briefly before the final chorus, then return with wider harmonies, brighter percussion and a new violin counter-line. Do not reuse the current chorus melody.
E. Post-generation or DAW Instructions
- Edit section length or remove unnecessary bars.
- Reduce competing midrange around the lead.
- Rebalance bass and kick.
- Automate width or ambience by section.
- Replace or mute a distracting stem.
- Preserve dynamic contrast before mastering.
F. Originality Confirmation
Record the new speaker, lyrics, hook, melody, rhythmic identity, arrangement decisions, edits and final ending. Confirm that no recognizable melody, chorus, riff or performer identity is carrying the result.
6. Worked Example
Project: an original Afro-reggae creator anthem moving from private doubt to communal determination.
Benchmark job: understand why a restrained opening becomes a credible communal ending.
