Reference Track Deconstruction Worksheet

Use a song as evidence, not as a blueprint. This workbook helps you separate what you are hearing from the identity of the recording, then turn the useful relationships into a Reference Direction Brief for your own project.

The finish line: you should be able to remove the artist name and song title and still know exactly what you want to carry forward.

BEFORE YOU LISTEN

Give the reference one job.

Do not ask one song to teach you everything. Decide why it is beside your project.

Possible job: Groove

Understand why the rhythm section feels credible, physical or relaxed.

Possible job: Chorus lift

Understand why the chorus feels larger without simply becoming louder.

Possible job: Vocal authority

Study phrasing, proximity, projection, restraint and support.

Possible job: Arrangement movement

Study what enters, leaves, resets, widens or changes role between sections.

STEP 1 · REFERENCE PURPOSE

Why is this song beside your project?

Reference song / recording
[Song / recording name]
The one job I am studying
[Example: why the chorus expands without losing the vocal]
What my current version is doing instead
[Describe the actual problem in your track]
STEP 2 · FIVE-FAMILY DECONSTRUCTION

Write observations, not admiration.

Describe audible behavior. Avoid “amazing,” “epic,” “beautiful,” artist names, and genre-only answers.

Time & Groove
[Pulse, pocket, swing/straight feel, subdivision, syncopation, kick-bass relationship]
Pitch & Harmony
[Melodic movement, register, chord rhythm, tension/release, tonal anchor]
Sound & Texture
[Timbre, brightness, width, depth, density, reverb, saturation, filtering]
Arrangement & Energy
[Entrances, exits, section contrast, builds, breakdowns, resets, peak behavior]
Performance & Expression
[Delivery, articulation, restraint, projection, phrasing, dynamics, backing responses]
STEP 3 · SECTION DELTA

What changes between sections?

Verse → Chorus
[What becomes wider, denser, higher, stronger, quieter, sparser, or more projected?]
Bridge / Breakdown / Reset
[What is removed or changed to create contrast?]
Final peak / Ending
[What specifically makes the ending feel resolved, unresolved, expanded, reduced or complete?]
STEP 4 · TRANSFERABLE VS NON-TRANSFERABLE

Separate craft from identity.

Transferable craft

General relationships such as: sparse verse → denser chorus; bass leaves space around vocal; close lead with distant support; syncopated secondary rhythm; narrow intro → wider full section.

Do not carry forward

Distinctive melody, lyrics, signature riff, recognizable vocal identity, unique hook wording, exact arrangement sequence, or other elements that make the original recording itself identifiable.

Three transferable behaviors
1. ___
2. ___
3. ___
Three things I will deliberately NOT copy
1. ___
2. ___
3. ___
STEP 5 · DIFFERENT IMPLEMENTATION

How will your project solve the same problem differently?

Reference behavior
[Example: chorus widens because backing voices enter]
My different implementation
[Example: keep backing voices minimal; widen through a second guitar layer and stronger lead projection instead]
FINAL OUTPUT · REFERENCE DIRECTION BRIEF

Reduce everything to the decisions you will actually use.

Reference purpose
[What job am I studying?]
Primary relationship
[The most important transferable behavior]
Secondary relationship
[Second useful behavior]
Protected traits in my project
[What must not be lost while testing this direction?]
Reject if
[What would mean the test drifted too far or became imitation?]
First test instruction
[One concise instruction that expresses the relationship without the artist/song name]
CONTROLLED TEST

Use the brief against one baseline.

Keep the rest of your project stable. Apply the First test instruction and compare only the behavior you intended to change.

Baseline question

What is the current version doing?

Test question

Did the intended relationship change—and did your protected traits survive?

CONTINUE THE LANE

Choose the next step by the problem you still have.
