Story Character Card Builder | Free Beginner Worldbuilding Worksheet

Free Creator Labs · Story Identity · Beginner Friendly

Build the people before you build the plot around them.

Use this free Character Card system to keep the important people in a story recognizable and believable. It works for short stories, books, comics, games, musicals, videos and larger story worlds.

Story first. Tools second.

You can complete these cards with pencil and paper. AI can later help you test scenes, organize notes or explore options, but the character should not become whatever the tool happens to generate next.

FLAME · Choose

Who matters, and what do they want?

ROCK · Ground

What must stay true about them?

CYCLE · Test

Do they still act like themselves under pressure?

HOUSE · Keep

Save the card as your character reference.

Character Jobs · Plain Language

Start with the job the character does in the story.

Main Character

Whose story are we mainly following? This is often called the protagonist.

Opposition

Who or what makes the main goal harder? This can be an antagonist, but it does not have to be an evil person.

Helper

Who helps the character move forward?

Guide

Who knows, teaches or reveals something important?

Important Other

Friend, family member, rival, partner, teammate or anyone whose relationship matters.

Other

If none of these fit, describe the job in your own words.

Beginner rule:

You do not need a card for every person who walks into a scene. Make a card when the character matters enough that you need to remember who they are, what they want or how they should behave later.

The three-scene character test

  1. Home scene: What is this person like when things are normal?
  2. Pressure scene: What happens when something important goes wrong?
  3. Relationship scene: How do they act around someone they trust, fear, love or compete with?

If the character suddenly becomes a completely different person only because the plot needs it, go back to the card. Either the scene needs work or the character needs a believable reason to change.

Building inside an existing world?

Keep three kinds of notes separate:

  1. Source facts: what already exists in the original work or source material.
  2. Your additions: the characters, relationships, places, rules or events you created.
  3. Your changes: anything you intentionally reinterpret, remix or move in a new direction.

If you plan to publish or sell work based on an existing property, verify what you actually have permission to use. Public-domain material, later adaptations, trademarks and newly created elements can have different rights.

What comes next?

WHO IS IN THE STORY? You just answered that here.

Want music around the story later?

Once the character and story job are clear, you can use the same source material to define a score, theme or supporting music direction without pretending the music tool understands the character automatically.
