SP06 establishes what version of the book has been verified and what release-risk decisions remain controlled. SP07 turns that approved content into professional reader-facing files through editing, formatting, accessibility, previewing, proofing, correction, and final production QA.
One content master can feed several formats. One final file should not be forced to serve them all. A reflowable ebook, paperback, hardcover, fixed-layout book, and audiobook are different production derivatives and need different checks.
Bring forward the exact SP06 version
Start with the verified manuscript version, clearance record, source/fact ledger, approved assets, contributor/rights decisions, and any release-date currentness checks. Do not begin from an untracked “latest draft.”
Editing has an order
Improve clarity, rhythm, voice, sentence and paragraph movement without smuggling structural rewrites back into a stable book.
Control grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, consistency, names, terminology, headings, cross-references, citations, and the project style sheet.
Create the actual format derivatives: ebook, print, illustrated/fixed-layout, audiobook, covers, and supporting files.
Proofread the produced file or physical/audio proof—not only the editable manuscript—because conversion and layout can introduce new defects.
After corrections, recheck anything the change could affect: TOC, pagination, links, cross-references, page count, cover dimensions, images, navigation, or audio transitions.
Choose the production branch before formatting everything
Reflowable eBook
Use this when text should adapt to the reader’s device, font size, spacing, and orientation. Build semantic headings, working navigation and TOC, flexible paragraphs, usable links, appropriate image alternatives, and layouts that survive text resizing. Print-only headers, footers, fixed page references, and manually forced line endings do not belong in a normal reflowable book.

Paperback & Print
Print is fixed-page production. Control trim, margins, gutter, bleed, typography, page sequence, running elements, page numbers, image quality, tables, intentional blanks, export, and print proofing. The final print cover depends on stable specifications and page count.
Hardcover
Treat hardcover as its own production derivative. Recheck the supported specifications, interior, cover construction, spine/hinge behavior, page count, and proof rather than assuming the paperback files can simply be reused.
Illustrated & Fixed-Layout
Use fixed layout only when the exact relationship among text, image, panel, page, or spread is integral to the work. Control page/spread jobs, text-image ownership, bleed and safe areas, image quality, visual continuity, logical reading order, text alternatives, legibility, navigation, file performance, and device/page preview. Fixed layout needs extra accessibility attention because the reader has less control over presentation.
Audiobook & Spoken Audio
Build from an approved narration script. Control narrator/voice rights, pronunciation, chapter segmentation, pickups, deviations from text, editing, levels, noise/artifacts, credits, and a complete listening pass. Distributor-specific technical specifications belong in the living SP08 platform layer and should be rechecked before submission.
Multi-Format Release
Keep one controlled content master and separate derivatives. A print page-number correction should not accidentally enter the ebook; an ebook navigation fix should not alter the print interior; a narration pickup should not silently change canonical text. Version every deliverable.
Front matter, back matter, and covers are production assets
Prepare only what the book needs: title/copyright pages, edition or imprint information where applicable, dedication, cleared epigraphs, TOC, preface/foreword/introduction, disclaimers, acknowledgments, notes, bibliography, glossary, appendices, author information, reader next steps, credits, and permissions.
Keep the cover package separate from the interior. Ebook, paperback, and hardcover covers are distinct outputs. A print cover should not be finalized against a moving page count.
SP07 does not need to freeze every publishing decision. ISBNs, retailer categories, keywords, pricing, territories, distribution, and platform submission choices belong primarily to SP08.
Accessibility is production quality
Check semantic headings, logical reading order, meaningful alt text or descriptions, descriptive links, navigation, complex tables/visuals, legibility, color/contrast where controllable, and accessibility metadata supported by the final format. A file can look polished and still create unnecessary barriers for readers.
Preview the format the reader will receive
- Reflowable ebook: resize text, test navigation and links, inspect images/tables, and preview across meaningful reading views.
- Print: inspect the rendered interior and cover; review a physical proof when feasible and appropriate.
- Fixed layout: inspect pages/spreads, crops, safe zones, reading order, legibility, and supported devices.
- Audiobook: perform a listening QC pass for pronunciation, missing content, pickups, transitions, noise, clipping, and level consistency.
Previewing is evidence. Proofing is not complete because an export succeeded.
Build a production package you can reproduce
Preserve the content master, editorially approved manuscript, style sheet, each format derivative, each cover, source design/image files, accessibility record, preview/proof notes, correction ledger, regression checks, SP06 clearance record, release-date recheck list, and a version manifest. Keep source files separate from release files.
SP07 production verdict
NOT READY FOR PRODUCTION CLOSE — major editing, formatting, asset, accessibility, proof, or version-control issues remain.
PRODUCTION IN PROGRESS — derivatives are being built, reviewed, or corrected.
CONDITIONAL PRODUCTION READY — the package is coherent, but named proof, currentness, asset, author-approval, or platform-specific checks remain controlled.
PRODUCTION READY — intended formats have final files, QA evidence, version control, and no hidden substantive manuscript changes. Remaining work belongs to SP08 publishing decisions.
Your SP07 completion artifact
Maintain a Publication Package & Production QA Record tied to the exact content-master version. It should show the editing sequence, selected formats, file versions, front/back matter, cover package, accessibility checks, previews/proofs, corrections, regression checks, final manifest, verdict, and SP08 handoff.

SP08 decides retailer-direct, aggregator/wide, wholesale/POD, owned-direct or hybrid routing; identifiers, metadata, categories/search fields, pricing, territories, exclusivity, distribution feeds, current platform requirements, submission, and post-live verification.
