Jesus’ Burial: Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, the Tomb & What the Gospels Say

The burial tradition is important because it connects the crucifixion directly to the empty-tomb narratives that follow.

Joseph of Arimathea across the Gospels

All four canonical Gospels identify Joseph of Arimathea as involved in obtaining and burying Jesus’ body. Their descriptions of Joseph vary: respected council member, disciple, one waiting for God’s kingdom, or a secret disciple because of fear.

John adds Nicodemus

John uniquely brings Nicodemus into the burial and describes a large quantity of spices. That detail should not be silently imported into Mark, Matthew or Luke as though each narrator said it.

The tomb

The accounts present burial in a rock-cut tomb and place women as observers or later visitors. Details about ownership, stone, guards and preparation differ by Gospel. Matthew alone includes the guard-at-the-tomb story.

Prophecy claims

Christians have long read Jesus’ burial through texts such as Isaiah 53. That is a theological/typological interpretation. The burial article should first establish what the Gospel sources narrate before declaring a prophecy “fulfilled” as though that conclusion were neutral historical description.
