Xania Monet’s Billboard Breakthrough: 2025 Chart Facts & 2026 AI Music Awards
Gary WhittakerJack Righteous · Chart history corrected October 23, 2026
Xania Monet reached Billboard's radio airplay rankings with an AI-generated singing voice, making music industry history in late 2025. Behind the R&B project is a real songwriter: Telisha “Nikki” Jones, whose personal lyrics and poetry became the foundation of the music made using Suno.
What exactly happened on Billboard?
Billboard reported that “How Was I Supposed to Know?” debuted at No. 30 on its Adult R&B Airplay chart for the chart dated November 1, 2025—its first known AI-created artist to reach a Billboard radio airplay chart. The song also reached No. 1 on R&B Digital Song Sales and No. 20 on Hot R&B Songs, while “Let Go, Let God” reached No. 3 on Hot Gospel Songs.
These rankings describe different measures: radio spins, sales and blended consumption. It would be inaccurate to claim Xania topped the Billboard Hot 100 or that every chart placement represented an overall No. 1 hit. The historic first here is specifically AI-artist radio airplay, not the first AI song to appear anywhere on Billboard.

Who is the human creator?
Telisha “Nikki” Jones is a Mississippi songwriter and poet. In a November 5, 2025 CBS News interview, Jones explained that the writing grew out of her experiences and poetry. She described the lyrics as her own and said the emotional center of “How Was I Supposed to Know?” relates to losing her father when she was young.
The project uses Suno to generate music and synthesized vocals from Jones's creative input. It should not be described as an unidentified proprietary voice clone or as evidence of a recorded human vocalist. Public reporting confirms the platform and Jones's role, but it does not establish a complete stem-by-stem production history.
What was the reported Hallwood deal?
Billboard reported that the Xania Monet project signed a multimillion-dollar agreement with Hallwood Media following competing offers reaching roughly $3 million. A reported deal value is not proof that the creator personally received that sum, nor does it establish ownership of every underlying composition or master without the contract.
Why does this case matter to Suno creators?
It shows that strong songwriting, a coherent virtual-artist identity, distribution and audience attention can combine around AI-generated performances. It does not guarantee that other creators will secure radio play, reach a chart, receive a label deal or own every AI-generated component simply by prompting.
The important distinction is between human-written lyrics, AI-generated recorded performance and contractual or copyright rights. Your account and platform terms, collaborators, third-party material and release agreements all need separate consideration.
What is new in October 2026?
The 2026 nominations mark another form of recognition: evaluation within an AI-specific peer awards system rather than a Billboard radio or sales chart. Xania's nominated song, album and R&B categories offer different measures of creative work, but no winners have been declared as of this update.
