Make Suno Sing Your Melody: Upload, Lyric Fit & Vocal Workflow
You can use your own melody as source material for a Suno vocal—but do not treat Audio Influence like an exact notation lock. The stronger workflow is: give Suno a clean melodic source, make the lyric fit the phrase, generate a small comparison set, then use stems or Studio when precision matters.
I have a melody recorded already
Upload the cleanest version you can. A piano, guide vocal or simple instrumental line is easier to interpret than a crowded full mix.
I need exact syllable timing
Match lyric phrasing to the melody before generating. If exact timing still matters afterward, finish it in Studio or your DAW rather than endlessly regenerating.
I want the vocal to follow the uploaded melody closely
Test Audio Influence deliberately, but judge the result by ear. Suno documents the control, not a guaranteed “100% = exact melody” rule. citeturn358856search5
I already have a keeper performance
Move into stems, Studio or your DAW. Do not destroy a keeper because one consonant or phrase needs alignment.
Use Suno to interpret the melody. Use editing to make the final performance precise.
Current Suno workflow
- Prepare the source melody. Export or record a clean phrase with a clear beginning, stable tempo and minimal competing elements.
- Upload the audio. Suno's current Audio Upload workflow lets Basic users upload up to 60 seconds and Pro/Premier users upload up to 8 minutes. citeturn358856search2
- Choose the creation path. Use Custom Mode when you need to control lyrics and style around the uploaded source.
- Write lyrics that fit the melody. Match phrase length, stressed syllables and breathing points to the melodic shape.
- Set the style and vocal direction. Keep the instruction focused. Do not bury the melody under unrelated production demands.
- Test Audio Influence. Treat it as a strength control for how much the uploaded source influences the result—not as an exact pitch/timing guarantee. citeturn358856search5
- Generate a small comparison set. Pick the version that best preserves the melodic idea and lyric fit.
- Extract or work with stems. Separate vocals if you need to align, rebalance or continue production.
- Finish in Studio or your DAW. Current Studio 2.0 supports audio/MIDI recording, timeline work, stems, effects and export, so precision can happen after generation. citeturn358856search0turn358856search3
Lyric fit matters more than people expect
If the lyric fights the melody, increasing Audio Influence will not magically solve phrasing. Start by checking four things:
Syllable count
Does the line contain roughly the amount of verbal material the melody can carry?
Stress placement
Do important syllables land where the melody naturally emphasizes notes?
Breathing room
Are there spaces where a singer can actually breathe or release a phrase?
Word shape
Long multi-syllable words can fight short note patterns even when the total count looks right.
A controlled test
Source: 8-bar piano melody, clean and dry Lyrics: Keep the phrase length close to the melody. Break lines where the musical phrase ends. Style: Intimate lead vocal, clear articulation, minimal arrangement, preserve the uploaded melodic contour, restrained verse production.
Generate a small set, then ask: Did the melodic contour survive? Did the lyric fit? Did the vocal phrase naturally? Change only one variable at a time.
Why the melody drifts
The source is too busy
Use a cleaner melody-only or guide-vocal source.
The lyric is overcrowded
Rewrite for the phrase instead of asking the model to cram more language into the same notes.
The style prompt fights the melody
Remove instructions that imply a different cadence, vocal delivery or rhythmic lane.
You need exact note-by-note control
That is now a production/editing problem, not a prompting problem.
Studio is now a much stronger second stage
Current Suno Studio 2.0 can record audio or MIDI directly onto the timeline, generate new parts through the Chat Bar, work with advanced stems and export individual stems or multitrack results. That makes the workflow less dependent on getting every syllable and note perfect in the first generation. citeturn358856search0turn358856search3
Generation gets you the performance idea. Studio or your DAW gets you the final alignment.
Original tutorial that inspired this page
This article originally highlighted a practical workflow demonstrated by Tim Makes Media. The video remains useful as a historical example of the upload → lyric-fit → stems concept, but Suno's interface and production tools have evolved since the tutorial was published.
When to stop generating
- You already have a vocal that carries the melody well.
- The remaining issue is timing by milliseconds, tuning, comping or consonant alignment.
- The lyric needs editing more than the vocal needs regeneration.
- The source melody itself needs revision.
- You are changing good takes just to chase theoretical perfection.
Where to go next
The lyric does not fit the melody
You need your own vocal identity
The uploaded audio is being blocked
You need to diagnose the whole production problem

Match the lyric and vocal behavior to the melody you are protecting
Use the Vocal Direction Vault when the uploaded melody is usable but syllable fit, phrasing, register, harmony or delivery keeps drifting away from the intended performance.
