1. Juju is its own Nigerian popular-music system
Juju emerged in Lagos in the early twentieth century from a meeting of Yoruba musical practice, guitar-based popular music and changing urban performance culture. Historical accounts connect early Juju to Tunde King and to combinations of guitar with Yoruba percussion including the dùndún or talking drum, as well as rattles and tambourine. Later musicians expanded and electrified the system rather than replacing its core ensemble relationships.
Operator rule: do not begin with “West African guitar.” Begin with a coherent Juju reference lane and identify what the guitars, drums, bass and voices are doing together.
2. Choose one coherent reference lane
Juju has changed across decades. Start with two or three references that teach one compatible system—early acoustic work, a classic electric lane, or another documented era/artist cluster. King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey are useful major reference points, but they should not be collapsed into one identical sound.
Record: approximate era, ensemble size, guitar roles, percussion roles, vocal function, arrangement length and production surface.

- Groove: How do the percussion layers and guitar cycles create forward motion without one part doing all the rhythmic work?
- Low end: How does bass reinforce the cycle while leaving room for guitars, drums and vocals to converse?
- Harmony: How does repeated harmonic or tonal material support long-form development rather than demanding frequent chord change?
- Palette: Separate the jobs of multiple guitars, percussion, talking drum, bass and voice. Which layers lead, answer, reinforce or decorate?
- Arrangement: Where do addition, subtraction, repetition and foreground rotation change the energy without relying on a modern build/drop?
- Foreground: At different moments, what owns attention—lead voice, guitar answer, talking-drum response, percussion conversation or the whole ensemble?
Listening evidence: write one sentence for each lens. Describe an audible relationship, not a vague “African” descriptor or an artist name.
3. The seven controls
- Reference-lane clarity. State the Juju era/ensemble direction you are studying.
- Guitar mesh. Assign multiple guitar parts separate cyclical, rhythmic or answering jobs rather than layering one bright riff repeatedly.
- Percussion hierarchy. Define which drum establishes time, which answers, and which fills space.
- Talking-drum function. When present in the chosen lane, treat dùndún as a responsive musical voice with phrasing and communicative history—not a novelty sound effect.
- Bass relationship. Let bass reinforce and converse with the guitar/percussion cycle instead of replacing it with a generic modern sub pattern.

- Cyclical arrangement development. Build energy through repetition, instrumental conversation, addition, subtraction and foreground rotation rather than forcing an EDM build/drop.
4. Cultural control: Yoruba percussion is not a preset
The talking drum is connected to Yoruba language and performance practices that extend far beyond Juju. Do not assume every Yoruba drum pattern belongs in Juju, and do not copy sacred or ceremonial material simply because an AI tool labels it “Yoruba.” Identify the specific popular-music function you are studying and document your references.
5. Build your Protect 3
Choose three audible decisions that must survive revision. Example:
- two or more clearly separated guitar jobs forming a repeating mesh;
- percussion/talking-drum responses that converse with the groove without crowding it;
- ensemble-led cyclical development rather than a modern pop/drop structure taking over.
Write each as a testable rule. “Keep it African” is not a usable production instruction.

7. Translate the brief into an AI music tool
Describe relationships, not just labels. A platform-independent direction could read:
Juju as the owner; layered cyclical electric guitars with separate rhythm and answering roles; mobile bass integrated with guitar and percussion; Yoruba-influenced percussion with talking drum used as responsive phrasing rather than constant decoration; warm lead vocal with restrained group response; long-form dance flow developed through instrumental conversation and subtraction/return; modern recording clarity without replacing the ensemble grammar.
If the generator ignores a specialist term, listen for the behavior you specified and rewrite the instruction in observable musical language.
8. Score the baseline

Ask: does B create stronger conversation, or does the drum begin crowding the guitars/voice and becoming a generic “African percussion” cue? Save both versions and write the smallest correction that restores ownership.
If your chosen lane does not use talking drum prominently, run the same experiment with second-guitar answer density instead. Reference evidence outranks a template.
Name the keeper: choose the version that best preserves your Protect 3 and write one sentence explaining why. The selection reason must refer to audible relationships, not personal preference alone.

- Next production move: targeted regeneration, guitar-role repair, percussion/talking-drum edit, live replacement or overdub, arrangement edit, stem/DAW work, mix preparation or another defined action.
Producer-handoff rule: the next person should know what must survive, what can change, why this version was selected and whether the next problem belongs in the generator, ensemble arrangement, source material or DAW/editor.
12. Completion and success
