Fix AI Music Tempo in Audacity: Tempo, Speed & Pitch (2026)

Before you stretch an AI-generated song, answer a harder question: is the tempo actually wrong—or does the track only feel too slow, rushed or flat?

Audacity 4.0 changes the mechanics of this workflow. The old Play-at-Speed control is not available in the initial 4.0 release. For tempo changes, Audacity 4 now centers the workflow on clip stretch plus Sliding Stretch; the current manual explicitly identifies Sliding Stretch as the replacement for Audacity 3's Change Tempo and Change Speed workflows.

Audacity 4.0 compatibility rule: do not follow an Audacity 3 tutorial that tells you to use Play-at-Speed, Change Tempo or Change Speed as though those controls carried over unchanged. In 4.0, use clip stretch for direct clip-speed changes, the clip pitch/speed dialog for clip-level pitch work, and Sliding Stretch when you need a selected-region tempo/pitch effect.

Tempo and perceived pace are not the same thing

The BPM is genuinely wrong

The whole song feels consistently too slow or too fast, and the musical relationships still work when you test a different clip speed. A tempo adjustment may be appropriate.

The vocal feels rushed

The BPM may be fine. Dense lyrics, short line breaks, crowded syllables or an overly busy arrangement can make one section feel hurried without the entire song needing a tempo change.

The track feels flat

Energy is not just BPM. Drum subdivision, syncopation, bass movement, section contrast and arrangement density can make two songs at the same tempo feel completely different.

Only one section drags

A global speed change is probably too blunt. Repair the section, edit the arrangement or isolate the clip that actually needs timing work.

Start here: if changing the whole song's speed would solve one problem but create three new ones, tempo is probably not the root issue.

Choose the right Audacity 4 control

FASTER / SLOWER CLIPSelect the clip → use the lower clock-marked stretch handles. Drag inward/outward to squeeze or stretch the clip.
EXACT CLIP SPEEDAfter changing speed, use the clip's speed badge to type an exact percentage.
PITCH WITHOUT CHANGING DURATIONRight-click the clip or open its ⋯ menu → Open pitch and speed dialog → adjust pitch in semitones/cents.
VOICE-SENSITIVE PITCH SHIFTUse the same pitch/speed dialog and audition the Optimize for voice option where appropriate.
SELECTED-REGION TEMPO OR PITCH CHANGEUse Effect → Pitch and tempo → Sliding Stretch. Set the initial and final tempo values the same for a constant tempo change, or use different values for a gradual acceleration/deceleration. Tempo and pitch can be changed independently.
AUDITIONINGAudacity 4.0 does not currently provide the old Play-at-Speed control. Work on a duplicate clip/project and compare controlled speed versions instead.

What changed from Audacity 3

Clip stretch is first-class

Select a clip and the lower handles marked with a clock change its speed. The clip displays a percentage badge after stretching, and you can type an exact value there.

Pitch lives with the clip

Open the clip menu and choose the pitch/speed dialog to shift pitch in semitones and cents while keeping the clip-level workflow intact. The Optimize for voice option can help preserve vocal resonances on speech or singing.

Play-at-Speed is missing in 4.0

The old audition-only playback-speed control is not part of the initial 4.0 workflow. Do not tell a beginner to look for it as though the Audacity 3 interface is unchanged.

Sliding Stretch is now the selection-based replacement

Audacity 4's current manual lists Change Pitch, Paulstretch and Sliding Stretch under Pitch and tempo, and explicitly says Sliding Stretch replaces Audacity 3's Change Tempo and Change Speed. For a fixed tempo change, set its initial and final tempo change to the same value.

Important distinction: clip stretch changes the speed of the whole clip through the clip UI. Sliding Stretch is an Effect-menu process for selected audio and can change tempo and pitch independently or continuously across the selection. They overlap in purpose, but they are not the same workflow.

A safer workflow for changing an AI track's tempo

Keep the original. Duplicate the track or save a separate project version before stretching. You need a clean A/B reference.
Diagnose the scope. Is the entire song wrong, or only the verse, intro, bridge or vocal phrasing? Do not process three minutes of audio to solve a ten-second problem.
Choose clip stretch or Sliding Stretch intentionally. Use the clip's lower clock handle when the whole clip needs a speed change. Use Sliding Stretch when the job belongs to a selected region or you need independent/gradual tempo and pitch control.
Test a representative excerpt. Choose audio containing vocals, drums, cymbals, sustained notes and ambience—not just an easy instrumental gap.
Make one controlled change. There is no universal “best” percentage for AI music. Move only as far as the song needs, then listen before pushing farther.
Listen for damage, not just improved pace. Check consonants, sibilance, kick and snare attacks, cymbal texture, bass definition, stereo width, reverb tails and vocal naturalness.
Check alignment after selection-based changes. Audacity notes that tempo/speed effects change the audio's length, so material that lined up before may no longer line up after the process. Recheck downstream clips and transitions.
Compare at matched listening level. Faster or brighter playback can seem more exciting simply because the presentation changed. Judge musical improvement, not novelty.
Stop when the repair costs more than it saves. If the stretch makes the source obviously processed, reduce the amount, work locally or regenerate the problem upstream.

Why large tempo changes become risky

Pitch-preserving time stretching has to reconstruct audio rather than simply replay the waveform at another rate. Audacity's current manual warns that large independent pitch or tempo moves can leave audible smearing or watery artifacts, especially on transients.

That does not mean “never change tempo.” It means use the smallest change that fixes the actual problem and judge the result with your ears.

Watch the stereo image when time-stretching

Stereo AI renders can contain very different information in the left and right channels. After any meaningful stretch, compare against the original and listen for narrowing, unstable ambience, shifted transients or vocal artifacts.

When Audacity is the wrong place to fix the problem

The groove is wrong

If the drums, subdivision or rhythmic feel are fundamentally wrong, changing tempo only makes the wrong groove happen faster or slower.

The vocal phrasing is wrong

If words are rushed, skipped or crammed together, fix lyric density, phrasing or the generated section rather than stretching the entire mix.

The arrangement has no momentum

A flat verse-to-chorus transition is an arrangement problem. Tempo cannot create contrast that is missing from the composition.

The required change is extreme

If the only way to save the song is a major global stretch that creates obvious artifacts, the stronger move is often a new generation or a more targeted reconstruction.

Downstream editing is best used as refinement. It should preserve a valuable performance—not become a way to force a fundamentally wrong generation into shape.

If you need the old Audacity 3 workflow

Audacity 4.0 is a transition release. If your project specifically requires Play-at-Speed, Time Tracks or another missing 3.x capability, keeping Audacity 3.7.9 available for that job can be more practical than pretending the 4.0 replacement is identical. For Change Tempo / Change Speed work, learn the Audacity 4 clip-stretch and Sliding Stretch equivalents instead of assuming the old menus still apply. Preserve your source files and version your projects so you can choose the tool intentionally.

After the pacing is right

Do not confuse timing repair with finishing. Once the song's pace works, continue through your actual finishing decisions: obvious repair, cleanup only where needed, tonal/mix work, mastering, loudness checks and export.

If the track is ready for that stage, use the AI song finishing workflow. If you are already at the final loudness/polish stage, continue to mastering AI-generated music in Audacity.
