Make sure mastering is actually the next job.
If your chorus is weak, the arrangement is too long, the vocal has a bad generation artifact or you are still deciding which version to release, mastering is too early. Those are song-development and repair problems.
What changed from the old advice
Do not master by genre preset.
There is no reliable rule saying reggae always needs one EQ curve, hip-hop another compressor setting or pop a specific limiter threshold. Two songs in the same genre can need completely different treatment because mastering responds to the actual mix in front of you.

1. Import the highest-quality source

2. Listen before processing
Play the song from beginning to end at a sensible volume. Write down actual problems: too bright, muddy, inconsistent, overly dynamic, clipped, weak low end, harsh vocal, or simply quieter than your reference. If you cannot name the problem, do not add an effect yet.
3. Use EQ only for tonal correction
Audacity's EQ tools can help correct broad tonal problems. Make small moves and compare frequently against bypassed audio. A mastering EQ move should usually feel like refinement, not a rescue operation. If you need extreme EQ, the mix or source probably needs work first.
4. Compress only if the dynamics need control

8. Test translation
