BandLab Splitter Workflow for AI Music Creators

Use Splitter when a finished stereo file is blocking the next production decision. The goal is not to turn one mix into a perfect original multitrack session. The goal is to create useful working parts so you can diagnose, repair, replace, rebalance or rebuild only what needs work.

Creator rule: preserve the original first. Separation can introduce bleed, artifacts or missing detail. Never make the separated version your only copy.

1. Start with the problem, not the feature

Before splitting anything, write down what is wrong. Is the vocal buried? Is the bass too dominant? Do you need an instrumental? Is one drum section weak? Are you trying to replace an element instead of regenerating the whole song?

If the full mix already works, do not split it just because the tool exists.

2. Confirm you have the right to process the source

Use audio you created, own, licensed or otherwise have permission to edit. A tool accepting an upload is not permission to process somebody else’s recording, voice or protected work.

3. Preserve the source and create a working copy

  1. Save the original WAV or highest-quality source available.
  2. Record the source platform, date and version.
  3. Create a clearly named working copy for separation.
  4. Keep lyrics, prompts, contributor notes and permissions with the project when relevant.

4. Run Splitter and inspect every separated part

BandLab’s current Splitter workflow can separate a mixed song into multiple working parts. The exact separation options can change as BandLab updates the product, so use the current interface rather than relying on an old fixed stem count.

Solo each result. Listen for bleed, phasey edges, missing transients, vocal artifacts and instruments leaking into the wrong part. A separated stem is an estimate from a mix—not the original recording session.

5. Decide what each part is for

  • Repair: clean, level or EQ a useful separated part.
  • Replace: mute a weak element and record or program a better one.
  • Rebalance: change the relationship between vocal, rhythm and supporting parts.
  • Rearrange: cut, move or extend sections when the structure needs work.
  • Derivative working version: create an instrumental, practice mix or alternate edit when your rights allow it.

6. Open useful parts in Studio

Move the separated material into BandLab Studio when you need timeline editing, recording, arrangement, effects, automation or a new mix. Current BandLab documentation also supports download/open workflows for separated material; where MIDI conversion is appropriate, use BandLab’s current Audio-to-MIDI workflow rather than assuming every separated stem becomes accurate MIDI automatically.

7. Repair the smallest useful problem

  1. Keep the original mix available for comparison.
  2. Name one failure.
  3. Change one meaningful variable.
  4. Listen in context, not only in solo.
  5. Compare before and after at matched listening level.
  6. Keep the change only if the song improves.

This is the same CONTROL principle used across JR training: do not destroy a working song to fix one weak component.

8. Rebuild deliberately

If separation reveals that the source itself is too compromised, stop trying to rescue it indefinitely. Preserve the useful idea—lyrics, hook, chord movement, rhythm, performance concept or arrangement—and rebuild the failing part with a cleaner source.

9. Mix after the repair works

Once the useful sources are in place, establish a static balance, pan intentionally, use corrective EQ or dynamics only where required, and automate only after the basic mix works.

10. QA before export

  • Original source preserved.
  • Separated parts checked for artifacts.
  • Only necessary parts repaired or replaced.
  • Transitions checked in context.
  • No clipping introduced.
  • Credits, permissions and source notes preserved.
  • Unmastered mix saved before mastering.
Do not overclaim Splitter. It can create useful separation, but it cannot recover detail that is no longer distinguishable in the mixed source.
