BandLab Smart Tools: Layer, Extend, Recompose & Audio-to-MIDI

Smart Tools are useful when the creator job requires editable musical information. They are not a mandatory stage after another app. Start with the musical problem, then decide whether MIDI conversion or AI-assisted MIDI development is the right execution method.

Workflow first: the source might be a melody recorded directly in BandLab, imported MIDI, a human instrument recording, a separated stem, or an authorized asset created elsewhere. The source app does not determine the next tool.

What the Smart Tools do

Layer

Generates complementary MIDI parts such as chords, bass and drums around existing MIDI. Use it when the central idea works but supporting arrangement is missing.

Extend

Continues a MIDI region by additional bars. Use it when the phrase needs a continuation, turnaround, bridge entrance or outro idea.

Recompose

Creates variations of existing MIDI. Use it when you want alternate note or rhythmic choices without discarding the musical anchor.

Audio-to-MIDI

Audio-to-MIDI converts suitable voice, instrument or drum recordings into editable MIDI. Clean, isolated source material is more useful than a dense full mix because the goal is to interpret the musical information, not recover the original performance perfectly.

Once converted, inspect the notes before doing anything else: remove false detections, correct timing where needed, simplify clutter and choose an appropriate virtual instrument.

When Splitter helps

If the musical idea exists only inside a mixed file, BandLab Splitter can estimate separate parts and open supported results as audio or MIDI. A separated stem is not the original multitrack session and may contain bleed or artifacts. Use separation only when isolating the part improves your ability to make the next decision.

A job-based control workflow

  1. Name the problem. Missing bass support, repetitive hook, weak transition, wrong instrument or another specific issue.
  2. Choose the smallest useful source. Existing MIDI, clean recording or isolated stem.
  3. Convert only if note-level control matters.
  4. Clean the MIDI. Do not build new layers on top of obvious transcription errors.
  5. Choose the Smart Tool by job. Layer for accompaniment, Extend for continuation, Recompose for variation.
  6. Make the human selection. Edit, combine, reject, revoice or perform a replacement.
  7. A/B against the previous version. More editable does not automatically mean better.
  8. Save the final decision and source.

  • Develop a melody into candidate harmony, bass or drums.
  • Create a less repetitive continuation to an existing MIDI phrase.
  • Generate alternate hook-note patterns for comparison.
  • Convert a clean vocal melody into editable notes.
  • Rebuild a bass or instrument idea with a different sound.
  • Create a documented note-level revision of an existing musical idea.

What Smart Tools do not solve

  • They do not turn every mastered song into perfect MIDI.
  • Audio-to-MIDI does not preserve the original timbre; it creates note data.
  • Generated accompaniment still requires musical judgment.
  • Splitter does not recreate original studio tracks.
  • MIDI editing does not replace mixing or mastering.
  • Technical processing does not clear rights in source material.
