Sulayman in the Qur’an: Ants, Birds, Jinn, Wind & the Queen of Saba

The Qur’anic Sulayman is not simply 1 Kings retold.
Surahs 27, 34 and 38 present Solomon as a prophet-king with gifts and episodes that differ sharply from the biblical Books of Kings.
Ants, the hoopoe and Saba
Surah 27 depicts Solomon understanding the speech of creatures. He hears an ant warn its colony and responds with gratitude. The hoopoe brings news of a woman ruling Saba and of her people’s worship. Solomon sends a message; the ruler consults her advisers, sends a gift and eventually comes to Solomon.
Her throne becomes part of the narrative, and she ultimately acknowledges God. The Qur’an does not name her Bilqis; that name belongs to later Islamic tradition.
Wind, jinn and construction
Surah 34 says the wind is subjected to Solomon and that jinn work for him by God’s permission, producing structures and large vessels. The theological emphasis is divine gift and the obligation of gratitude, not independent magical power possessed by Solomon.
Solomon’s death and the unseen
Surah 34 also tells how Solomon’s death is revealed to the working jinn only when a creature of the earth eats through his staff and his body falls. The episode explicitly undercuts the idea that the jinn possess knowledge of the unseen.
Why source discipline matters
Readers comparing Kings and the Qur’an should resist forcing one narrative into the other. Kings emphasizes Temple, royal administration, accumulation, wives and idolatry. The Qur’an emphasizes prophetic gifts, gratitude, submission to God and the limits of creaturely knowledge. Those are related religious memories, not interchangeable texts.
