Suno v5.5 Guide: Features, Audio Uploads, Rights & Copyright
Gary WhittakerAI Music Production · Suno v5.5
Suno v5.5 is more useful when you stop treating every new button as a reason to regenerate. Start with the production problem: create, reference, transform, edit, personalize, use your own voice, finish, or prepare for release. Then use the feature that actually fits that job.
Reviewed against current Suno documentation: August 15, 2026.

Which Suno feature should you use?
The same song can fail for very different reasons. Match the tool to the failure instead of rerolling everything.
| Your production goal | Broader concept | Suno route | Do not use it as a substitute for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create a new song from direction | Generation | Create + Styles + Lyrics | A clear creative brief |
| Start from your own recorded idea | Audio conditioning / reference input | Audio Upload | Permission to use someone else’s recording |
| Change the production identity of a song | Transformation | Cover | Local section repair |
| Fix one weak section | Targeted revision | Song Editor / Replace Section | A full-song reroll |
| Use your own vocal identity | Voice modeling | Voices in v5.5 | Cloning another person without rights/consent |
| Bias generations toward your catalog | Personalized model | Custom Models | Uploading tracks you do not own |
| Let Suno reflect your preferences | Preference personalization | My Taste | A deliberate Style prompt |
| Arrange, record and work at timeline level | Production/editing environment | Suno Studio | Every task a full DAW may handle |
| Polish a song whose structure already works | Sonic refinement | Remaster | Rewriting weak lyrics or structure |
The real v5.5 update
v5.5 is as much about personalization as sound quality
Suno’s March 2026 v5.5 announcement centers on three personalization features: Voices, Custom Models and My Taste.
Voices
Your vocal identity
Create songs using a verified model of your own voice. Suno positions this as the evolution beyond Personas for vocal identity.
Read the JR Voices guideCustom Models
Your catalog as direction
Pro and Premier users can build private model variants from tracks they own, giving the model a stronger signal for their own sound.
My Taste
Your preferences as context
Available to all users, My Taste can influence Style augmentation based on listening and creation preferences.
Audio Uploads
Upload audio when your own source material should anchor the result
Audio Upload is useful when the important creative information already exists as sound: a hummed melody, chord idea, groove, field recording, demo, instrumental sketch or a longer original song.
- Choose source audio you have the right to use. Do not treat upload capability as permission to upload a commercial recording.
- Decide what the source is contributing. Melody? Rhythm? Performance? Harmony? Texture? A full arrangement?
- Keep the new production direction separate. Tell Suno what should change rather than expecting the upload to answer every production decision.
- Use the appropriate transformation. Extend when you need more music after the source; Cover when the song should be reinterpreted; Studio when you need timeline-level work.
- Compare against the source. Judge what was preserved, what drifted and whether that drift helped.
Voices
Use Voices when the vocal identity—not just the genre—is the production problem
Suno currently allows a Voice source from a library song, a real-time recording or an uploaded file. Its help documentation says the input can run from 15 seconds to 4 minutes, from which you select the strongest portion; clean acapella tends to give the clearest source.
Good use
You wrote a song or built an arrangement and want to hear it through your own verified vocal identity before deciding how to record, revise or release it.
Wrong assumption
A Voice model does not guarantee every phrase will sound exactly like a live performance, and it does not give permission to reproduce another person’s identity.
Suno’s current Voices FAQ also notes that v5.5 must be selected for the new Voices feature and suggests Audio Influence as one troubleshooting control when the result does not resemble the source closely enough.

Custom Model, My Taste or a normal prompt?
| Use this | When | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Style prompt | You can clearly describe the target song. | Explicit current-song direction. |
| My Taste | You want Suno’s Style augmentation to reflect broader preferences. | Preference context derived from your activity. |
| Custom Model | You have a body of your own work whose characteristics should influence future generations. | A private model variant based on owned tracks. |
| Voice | The singer identity should be your own verified voice. | Vocal identity rather than the entire production identity. |
Suno says Pro and Premier users can create up to three Custom Models and can begin with as few as six owned tracks. Custom Models are private. My Taste is available to all users and can be edited or disabled.
Stop rerolling
Generation is only the first stage
A modern AI music workflow should separate creation from revision. If 80% of the song works, protect the 80%.
Song Editor
Use when a section, lyric passage, ending or arrangement area needs targeted change.
Cover
Use when the song identity is worth keeping but the production/style direction needs a larger transformation.
Cover workflowStudio
Use when you need a timeline, recordings, uploaded clips, alternate takes and more detailed arrangement work.
Rights are not one question
Ownership, commercial use and copyright are different
This distinction is essential for anyone planning to distribute or monetize AI-assisted music.
| Question | What Suno currently says | What it does not automatically prove |
|---|---|---|
| Can I commercially use a song? | Songs made while subscribed to Pro or Premier are granted commercial-use rights, subject to Suno’s terms. | That the work qualifies for copyright protection. |
| Does Suno consider me the owner? | Suno says paid users are considered owners of songs generated while subscribed; Basic outputs remain subject to free-tier restrictions. | That every element is legally protectable or exclusively yours under local law. |
| Can I copyright it? | Suno explicitly says commercial-use rights do not guarantee copyright protection. | A registration outcome in your country. |
| Can I upload source material? | Yes, when you have the required rights/permissions. | Permission to use someone else’s song, recording, sample or voice. |
| Does upgrading later fix a free-plan song? | Suno says paid licensing is not retroactive by default for songs made on Basic. | Commercial rights to an earlier free-tier song. |

Seven decisions from idea to usable song
- Define the creative brief. Name the emotional job, audience, sound direction, voice role and must-keep idea before generating.
- Choose your strongest input. Text direction, your own audio, your Voice, a Custom Model—or a deliberate combination. Do not add every personalization layer automatically.
- Generate enough to compare, not enough to hide the decision. Keep versions purposeful.
- Diagnose the winner. Is the problem global, local, vocal, structural, lyrical or sonic?
- Use the smallest appropriate revision tool. Cover for global transformation, Song Editor for local repair, Extend for more structure, Remaster for sonic polish, Studio for deeper production.
- Document human choices and source material. Save lyrics, edits, original recordings, prompts/briefs, selected versions and permissions.
- Check release rights separately. Confirm the account context under which the song was made, your source rights and the requirements of the distributor/platform you plan to use.

Suno v5.5 FAQ
What are the main new features in Suno v5.5?
Suno’s official v5.5 announcement highlights Voices, Custom Models and My Taste. These sit alongside the wider Suno workflow of creation, uploads, Covers, editing and Studio.
Can I upload my own music to Suno?
Yes. Suno’s current Audio Upload guide says Basic users can upload up to 60 seconds and Pro/Premier users up to 8 minutes. You must have the rights and permissions needed for anything you upload.
Can I upload a copyrighted song as a reference?
The existence of an upload feature does not give you rights to a third-party recording. Suno’s Terms require you to have the necessary rights, licences, consents and permissions for submissions.
Does Suno v5.5 let me use my own voice?
Yes, through Voices where available. Suno requires voice verification and provides recording/upload/library-song options for creating your own Voice.
Is a Custom Model the same as a Voice?
No. A Voice focuses on vocal identity. A Custom Model is a private v5.5 model variant built from multiple tracks you own to bias generations toward your broader sound.
Do I own songs made on a paid Suno plan?
Suno currently says users subscribed to Pro or Premier are considered owners of songs generated while subscribed and receive commercial-use rights, subject to its Terms.
Can I monetize songs made on the free plan?
Suno currently limits Basic-plan outputs to non-commercial use. Upgrading later does not grant retroactive commercial licensing by default.
Does paid-plan ownership mean I automatically have copyright?
No. Suno expressly separates ownership/commercial-use rights from copyright protection. Copyright eligibility depends on applicable law and human authorship requirements in the relevant jurisdiction.
When should I use Cover instead of Song Editor?
Use Cover when the overall production identity should change while the song remains recognizable. Use Song Editor or section replacement when the problem is local.
When should I move from Suno into a DAW?
Move when you need control the current Suno workflow does not provide reliably enough for your project—for example detailed mix decisions, external plugins, exact automation, specialized editing or delivery requirements.
