Mixing, mastering and finishing are not the same job. This guide gives you a platform-independent way to decide what the track actually needs before you reach for Suno Studio, Musicfy, BandLab, a DAW, stem tools, mastering services or another generation.
Three different jobs
Mixing
Shape relationships inside the track: balance, frequency roles, low end, foreground clarity, stereo placement, depth, dynamics and section-to-section contrast.
Mastering
Prepare an already-successful mix for consistent final translation and delivery. It is the last refinement layer, not the first repair layer.
Finishing
The broader decision system: diagnose, repair or isolate sources if needed, mix, test translation, decide whether mastering is warranted, export, document and perform final QC.
The JR Mix & Finish sequence
Work in this order. Do not jump ahead because a tool offers a convenient button.
Before effects, can the important parts be heard at sensible relative levels?
Which elements own the low, low-mid, mid and high-frequency attention? Identify masking before boosting everything.
Decide how kick, bass and other low elements share weight. More bass is not automatically better bass.
Protect the lead vocal, instrument or hook from competing elements. The foreground should feel intentional, not merely louder.
Use width, placement and ambience to create separation without weakening focus or mono compatibility.
Control distracting level swings while preserving useful movement, punch and contrast.
Check whether verses, choruses, drops, bridges and outros change weight for a reason instead of staying equally dense.
If a problem cannot be repaired cleanly in the full mix, decide whether stems, source separation, replacement or a return to generation is the correct layer.
Compare on headphones, speakers and a small playback system at matched-feeling levels. Listen for disappearing vocals, bloated bass, harshness and collapsed width.
Master only after the mix relationships work. Compare before and after; louder is not proof of better.
Save a clearly named final candidate, verify beginning/end, clipping, unwanted artifacts, version identity and intended delivery format.
Diagnose the repair layer before touching the mix

Project job: What must this finished audio do?
Source/version: Which exact version are you evaluating?
Reference evidence: What relationships are you checking against?
Intended use: Demo, social, video, streaming, client delivery or other.
Protected sonic traits: Name three things that must survive.
Balance diagnosis: What is too dominant, hidden or unstable?
Low end: What owns the weight, and is it controlled?
Foreground clarity: Can the lead be followed without strain?
Masking: Which elements compete for the same attention?
Stereo/depth: What is too wide, narrow, distant or crowded?
Dynamics: What movement should remain, and what is distracting?
Section contrast: Does energy change for a reason?
Stem decision: Full mix, stems, replacement or regenerate?
Smallest intervention: Change one meaningful thing first.
What stayed constant: Protect the comparison.
Before/after evidence: What improved? What got worse?
Translation: What changed across playback systems?
Mastering required? Why or why not?
Final export decision: Keep, revise, master, hold or deliver.
Unresolved issue / next action: Name it precisely.
