What is BandLab SongStarter?
SongStarter is BandLab’s AI-powered idea generator. It creates short, customizable musical starting points across different genres. You can adjust the genre, mood, tempo and key, compare three variations, regenerate the idea and then save it as a project or continue editing it inside BandLab Studio.
That description matters. SongStarter is not presented as a finished-song ownership service. It is designed to help when you have writer’s block, need a direction for a new project or want to test a genre before building the full arrangement.

How much does SongStarter cost?
SongStarter itself is free with a BandLab account. You do not need Pro or Max Membership to generate SongStarter ideas or begin editing them in BandLab Studio.

How to use SongStarter
- Open SongStarter. On the web, select Create and then SongStarter. On mobile, open the Create tab and select SongStarter under Tools.
- Choose a genre. Start with one clear direction rather than combining several unrelated styles.
- Set the mood, tempo and key. These controls help you compare ideas within the same creative target.
- Compare the three variations. Listen for the rhythm, chord movement, energy and arrangement rather than treating the first result as final.
- Regenerate when the direction is wrong. Do not keep polishing an idea that does not fit your intended song.
- Save as a project or edit in Studio. This is where the real creator work should begin.
Beginner mistake to avoid
Do not hear a usable loop and immediately think, “This is now my finished song.” SongStarter gives you direction. Your value comes from what you build from that direction.
Do you own music generated by SongStarter?
No—not the generated track itself. BandLab’s current SongStarter help page says that users do not own the rights to the generated track. It also says users may use the track without paying fees or royalties to the original creator.
Those two statements are not contradictory. They describe the difference between permission to use something and ownership of something.

Can you upload a SongStarter track directly to Spotify?
I would not recommend distributing the unchanged SongStarter output as your own exclusive song.
BandLab Distribution says submitted releases must avoid content that you do not have the rights to. SongStarter separately says you do not own the generated track. Taken together, those rules create an obvious problem for anyone trying to submit the raw output as an original master they fully control.
BandLab does not publish a percentage of editing that suddenly makes a SongStarter project “original enough.” Copyright and distribution decisions depend on the actual human-created material, the platform terms, the distributor’s review and the laws that apply where you live.
A paid BandLab Membership is also required to submit releases through BandLab Distribution. That paid access gives you the distribution service; it does not by itself grant ownership of the original SongStarter generation.

The goal is not to make a few cosmetic edits. The goal is to use the generated idea to start decisions that come from you.
1. Identify the useful idea
Write down what worked: tempo, groove, mood, chord movement, instrumentation or arrangement energy.
2. Change the structure
Build your own intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge and ending rather than preserving the generated sequence.
3. Add original writing

4. Replace key elements
Record or program your own drums, bass, chords, instruments and vocals where possible.
5. Keep project records
Save drafts, stems, lyric versions, MIDI, recordings and notes showing how the finished work developed.
6. Review before release
Confirm the current BandLab terms and your distributor’s rules before claiming ownership or submitting the track.
