Rock is a relationship between parts—not a distorted-guitar preset.

Build Rock by deciding what drives the band: riff or motif, drum feel, bass relationship, guitar or keyboard roles, vocal stance, section contrast, dynamics and production intent. Then test one variable at a time.

Rock grew through a collision of traditions, including rhythm & blues, gospel, country, folk and other American popular-music forms. The family kept diversifying. That history matters because there is no single universal Rock recipe.

Choose a working Rock lane

Roots / Classic Rock

Riff-led writing, audible rhythm-section interaction, melodic lead roles and warm or live performance character.

Hard Rock

Heavier attack and greater weight while Rock band grammar remains primary. If Metal riff, drum or extremity grammar takes over, use the Metal path.

Garage / Raw Rock

Direct riffs, compact arrangement, human looseness and restrained polish. Raw does not mean unclear.

Alternative / Indie Rock

Use this lane only when Rock band interaction is still the primary grammar. “Alternative” and “Indie” are broad umbrellas, not one sound.

Grunge / Dynamic-Heavy Rock

Weight, vulnerability, abrasive color and strong loud/quiet relationships without reducing the lane to a costume.

Progressive / Expansive Rock

Longer development, unusual form or meter, recurring motifs and instrumental conversation. Use only when those decisions are actually structural.

Do not create a new page just because the label changes.

Indie Folk belongs with Folk when folk lineage, storytelling and acoustic function are primary. Indie Pop belongs with Pop when hook-forward pop grammar is primary. Use a separate genre page only when a different musical system actually owns the track.

Listening anchor: AC/DC — “Back In Black”

Use this recording as ear training for riff ownership, drum pocket, bass support, guitar role separation, vocal stance and section contrast. It is a useful hard-rock reference, not a claim that this one song defines the entire Rock family.

Open the exact track on Spotify.

  1. Identify what the main riff does structurally—not just that a guitar riff exists.
  2. Describe how the drums support the riff without constantly competing with it.
  3. Listen for the bass role: doubling, anchoring or moving independently.
  4. Note how rhythm and lead guitar occupy different jobs.
  5. Describe how the vocal intensity fits the band rather than floating above it.
  6. Name one section where contrast comes from density, entry/exit or dynamics instead of a completely new sound.

The Rock control map

Control Decide Listen for
Riff / motif What musical figure establishes identity? Whether the figure returns with a clear section job instead of becoming decoration.
Drum feel Straight, swung, halftime, driving, restrained, broken or syncopated? Backbeat placement, kick relationship, fills and section lift.
Bass role Lock to kick, double riff, anchor roots or move independently? Low-end conversation rather than a bass instrument merely being present.
Guitar / keys Rhythm, riff, texture, counterline, lead or harmonic support? Clear role separation and useful register space.
Harmony Stable, blues-inflected, modal, riff-centered, tense or open? Whether harmonic language reinforces the chosen lane.
Vocal stance Conversational, gritty, melodic, shouted, restrained, theatrical? Intensity and phrasing that follow the arrangement.
Form Where does energy enter, leave and peak? Section contrast, hook timing, bridge purpose and ending logic.
Production Dry, live-room, warm, saturated, wide, dense or intimate? Production serving the band instead of replacing the musical identity.

Boundary checks

Rock → Metal

Reject the drift when Metal-specific riffing, drum language, density or extremity becomes the primary identity. Use the Metal foundation.

Rock → Punk / Hardcore

Check whether speed, economy, attack and stripped-down song function have taken ownership. Use the Punk foundation.

Rock → Shoegaze

Check whether effects, texture, depth and vocal placement now matter more than riff and band articulation. Use Shoegaze when texture is the blocker.

Rock → Pop / Folk

If pop hook/polish grammar or folk lineage/story function becomes primary, move to that owner rather than stretching Rock until the label means nothing.

How to Use Jack Righteous

Run one controlled A/B

  1. Generate or produce one baseline from the brief.
  2. Write what succeeded and what drifted.
  3. Change one variable only: riff role, drum feel, bass relationship, guitar/keyboard role, vocal stance, section contrast or production character.
  4. Compare A and B against the same Protect 3.
  5. Record which version advances and why.

Success: you can explain why the chosen version reads as your Rock lane without saying only “it has guitars” or relying on an artist name.

Platform translation comes last

Once the musical brief is clear, translate it into Suno, Musicfy, ElevenLabs Music, Udio or another capable system. Platform fields and model behavior change; the Rock decisions above remain useful. If the composition is right and only one section fails, edit the section instead of making the prompt longer.

Need prompt vocabulary?

Use the A–Z Genre Prompt Reference after the musical decisions are written.

Need deeper preservation practice?

Continue to the paid Rock Genre Control Lab when repeated generations keep losing the same Rock identity.
