Audio tells Studio what something sounds like. MIDI describes musical information such as notes, timing and performance data. Text describes what you want. Use MIDI when the notes, chords, rhythm or editable performance shape are the part you actually need to control.

Beginner rule: MIDI is not finished audio. Treat it as editable musical instructions and judge the generated or rendered result against the musical idea you meant to preserve.

What actually shipped with Studio 2.0 MIDI

Suno's August 13 Studio 2.0 release turned MIDI into a native part of the Studio timeline. The practical change is bigger than simply importing a MIDI file: you can now create, perform, edit, transform and generate from musical note data without leaving Studio.

Studio 2.0 control What it means in practice
MIDI tracks MIDI clips live beside audio clips on the timeline and hold notes rather than recorded sound.
Piano roll Draw, move and resize notes; adjust velocity, pitch bend and modulation; and quantize musical data.
Musical typing Use your computer keyboard to play MIDI, including chord modes and an arpeggiator, when you do not have a hardware controller.
External MIDI Use compatible hardware controllers for playing, recording, MIDI Learn and transport control through Web MIDI.
Audio ↔ MIDI Drag compatible audio onto a MIDI track to create an editable note representation, or use MIDI as the musical basis for a new generated audio result.
Wavetable synth New MIDI tracks can drive Suno's built-in synth for basses, leads, pads, chords and other sounds, with presets you can edit or describe through Chat.
Browser note: Suno currently recommends Chrome for Studio. Web MIDI is not currently available in Safari, so a hardware controller workflow may require a supported browser even when the rest of Studio opens normally.

MIDI
Use it when notes, chords, rhythm, timing or editable performance data are the evidence that must remain controllable.
AUDIO
Use your recording when the actual tone, voice, phrasing, groove or captured performance is the keeper.
TEXT
Use prompting when you want AI to invent the musical material and do not need to supply exact musical data.

The first MIDI workflow to learn

  1. Start with one small musical idea. A short melody, chord progression or rhythmic phrase is enough to learn the relationship.
  2. Choose how to enter it. Import existing MIDI, record from a controller, use musical typing or draw notes in the piano roll.
  3. Edit the MIDI first. Fix notes, velocity or timing you already know are wrong before sending the idea downstream.
  4. Give the MIDI one job. Lead melody, bass movement, chord guide, rhythm or another defined role.
  5. Choose the sound separately from the notes. Use the Wavetable synth, a preset or a generated audio interpretation depending on the production goal.
  6. Compare against the MIDI intention. Did the result preserve the contour, rhythm, notes or harmonic movement that mattered?
  7. Keep the winner and stop. Once the part solves the stated problem, move it into the arrangement.

Three useful starting points

You have Use MIDI when Use audio when
A melody The contour and notes should remain editable. Your sung phrasing or vocal character is the important evidence.
A chord progression The harmonic movement should remain explicit. The voicing, instrument tone or exact performance is the keeper.
A rhythmic idea The pattern and timing are the main instruction. The groove depends on the exact feel and sound of the performance.

Import, perform, draw or extract?

  • Import MIDI when the musical data already exists in another project or tool.
  • Record MIDI when your keyboard/controller performance is part of the creative decision.
  • Use musical typing when you want to perform or audition notes without buying a controller.
  • Draw MIDI when precision matters more than live performance; use the piano roll to place and edit the notes directly.
  • Extract MIDI from compatible audio when you want an editable working representation of musical information already present in the audio.

Treat extracted MIDI as a representation to inspect and edit—not as proof that every nuance of the original audio was perfectly recovered.

MIDI as a prompt: the Studio 2.0 difference

One of Studio 2.0's most useful generative ideas is that MIDI can do more than trigger a synth. A MIDI clip can supply musical information for a new audio generation. That creates a practical middle ground between a text-only prompt and preserving an exact recorded performance.

Use this when: you want to preserve the melody, chord movement or rhythm but let Studio reinterpret the sound, instrumentation or production around that musical information.

This does not mean every generated result will reproduce the MIDI identically. Treat the MIDI as the musical anchor, then compare the resulting audio against the notes and movement you intended to protect.

Example: keep the melody, change the instrument

Problem: the melody works, but the instrument carrying it does not.

Weak move: regenerate the entire song and hope the melody survives.

Controlled move: protect the keeper → preserve or create the MIDI for the melody → correct it in the piano roll → choose a new synth/preset or generate a new audio interpretation → compare against the original → keep the version that serves the song better.

This is the MIDI version of the wider JR rule: KEEP → EDIT → REPLACE → REGENERATE.

When to use the Wavetable synth instead of generating again

If the notes are already right and you mainly need a different electronic sound, try changing the instrument before asking AI to create new musical material. The production question becomes: Is the composition wrong, or is the sound design wrong? If the composition is working, changing the patch can preserve more of what you already approved.

What should you save?

  • original MIDI you imported or created;
  • meaningful edited versions;
  • source audio when MIDI came from your own recording;
  • selected generated/rendered candidates;
  • the approved Studio version and export;
  • a note explaining what musical information you supplied and what changed.

Completion check

This tutorial is complete when you can explain why MIDI is the correct input for the problem, identify the musical information you are protecting, choose the right entry method, make one MIDI-led change and judge the result against that musical intention.
