Extension is controlled continuation. When the song you already have is worth keeping, the goal is not simply to make it longer. Add the missing material while protecting the identity, momentum and evidence you already earned.
1. Preserve the stable source
This free APPLY lesson is independently completable. Start with the exact version whose performance, groove, melody, production or narrative is worth preserving.
2. Define the continuation job and endpoint
“Make it longer” is not a production decision. Decide what the new material must accomplish and where the song should be when the extension finishes.
3. Set protected traits and a drift budget
Generative continuation carries uncertainty. You cannot guarantee exact preservation, but you can decide what must remain stable, what may evolve and what amount of change makes a candidate unacceptable.
4. Generate a controlled continuation set
Keep the stable source, continuation point and protected traits fixed. Generate a small candidate set before changing the brief. Diagnose shared failure before generating more.
5. Current Suno implementation
The principle transfers to any editor that can continue from existing audio. In Suno’s currently documented web workflow, open the song’s three-dot menu, choose Remix/Edit → Extend, use the white arrow to choose how much of the original to retain, add needed lyrics or focused style direction, and create continuation options. On the chosen extension, use Create → Get Whole Song to stitch it to the retained source.
In Suno’s Song Editor, the + control at the far right can extend with a prompt or Quick Extend. Internal + controls are for adding material inside the existing arrangement.

6. Judge the join and the full continuation
A good new section can still be a bad extension. Listen from before the join through the endpoint, then make one full retained-to-ending pass.
