What this guide will help you do

What happens after the Ten Commandments? Exodus 24 seals the Sinai covenant with words, blood, commitment and a remarkable meal before God.

The Ten Commandments are not the end of the Sinai scene. Exodus 24 turns the words spoken at the mountain into a covenant ceremony involving public commitment, sacrifice, blood and a meal in the presence of God.

What leads into Exodus 24?

Exodus 20 gives the Ten Words. Exodus 21–23 contains a wider collection commonly called the Book of the Covenant, addressing subjects including servants, violence, property, restitution, vulnerable people, justice, Sabbath and festivals.

For the Decalogue itself, see Mount Sinai & the Ten Commandments.

Moses writes down the words

Exodus 24 says Moses writes down the words of the LORD. He builds an altar and twelve pillars corresponding to the twelve tribes. Young men offer sacrifices.

Moses takes part of the blood and throws it against the altar. He then reads the “book of the covenant” to the people. They respond that they will do and obey what the LORD has spoken.

What is the “blood of the covenant”?

Moses throws blood on the people and identifies it as the blood of the covenant made on the basis of these words. Within Exodus, the act solemnizes the relationship between God and Israel. Covenant is not presented as vague spiritual feeling. It carries declared obligations.

Later Jewish and Christian traditions develop covenant language differently. Christian Scripture famously reuses “blood of the covenant” language in relation to Jesus. That is a later canonical interpretation, not a reason to erase the Sinai ceremony’s original Israelite setting.

Did the elders actually see God?

Exodus 24 says Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy elders ascend and “see the God of Israel,” followed by imagery of something like sapphire pavement beneath his feet. It also says God does not lay a hand on these leaders and that they eat and drink.

This creates an important tension with passages such as Exodus 33, where Moses is told that a human cannot see God’s face and live. Biblical interpreters have offered distinctions between seeing a manifestation, vision, feet/pavement imagery or divine glory rather than the divine essence. The text itself does not pause to give a philosophical system resolving every description.

A covenant meal

The leaders “beheld God, and ate and drank.” The meal marks fellowship after covenant ratification. The biblical sequence is striking: liberation from Egypt leads to law, commitment and table fellowship.

Then Moses goes higher

Moses is called farther up the mountain to receive the stone tablets. The cloud covers Sinai. Moses remains on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

That delay sets up the crisis of Exodus 32. While Moses receives instructions concerning worship and divine presence, the people below become convinced they need a visible object to go before them.

The Golden Calf does not happen before covenant. It happens immediately after covenant has been solemnized. That placement makes the rupture much more serious.
