Paul the Apostle: Earliest Letters, Missions, Torah, Grace & Historical Evidence

Paul’s letters are the earliest surviving Christian documents. That makes them essential evidence for what Jesus followers believed before the written Gospels reached their final forms.

Which letters are most secure?

Most critical scholars regard Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians and Philemon as undisputed Pauline letters. Authorship of Ephesians, Colossians and 2 Thessalonians is debated, while the Pastoral Epistles—1 and 2 Timothy and Titus—are widely disputed in critical scholarship. Christian traditions do not all weigh those questions the same way.

Paul before Acts

Because Paul’s undisputed letters are earlier than Acts, they should not be treated as footnotes to Luke’s later narrative. Galatians, for example, gives Paul’s own account of his call, Jerusalem contacts and conflict with Cephas/Peter.

Torah, faith and Gentiles

Paul’s arguments about law, faith, circumcision and justification are often pulled out of their first-century Jewish/Gentile dispute and turned immediately into later Protestant-versus-Catholic debates. Those later debates matter historically, but they should come after Paul’s own context.

Paul strongly opposes requiring Gentile Christ-followers to become circumcised Jews. That does not mean every sentence about ‘law’ is a blanket condemnation of Judaism. Romans itself warns Gentile believers against arrogance toward Israel.

What Paul knows about Jesus

Paul refers to Jesus’ crucifixion, Davidic descent, a last-meal tradition, teachings on divorce and support for missionaries, Jesus’ brother James, Peter/Cephas and early resurrection claims. He is not writing a biography, but his incidental references are historically valuable.

Paul’s reach

His letters show connected communities across the eastern Mediterranean wrestling with money, sex, food, class, charismatic gifts, resurrection, leadership and ethnic belonging. Paul is not merely an abstract theologian; he is a network builder responding to real communities under pressure.
