First, separate the terms
Bounce / render / print
Create a new audio file from an existing track, bus, instrument or processing state. Different platforms use different labels, but the common idea is that the current result becomes a new asset.
Freeze
Temporarily or semi-reversibly render processing or instruments so the system does less live work. Some DAWs make this easy to unfreeze; others use different terminology.
Consolidate
Combine edits or regions into a simpler continuous asset, often to make timing, transfer or session management easier. Consolidation should not silently replace your source history.
Creative resampling
Record or render an existing musical result into new audio so you can chop, reverse, stretch, process or reinterpret it as material. This is a creative production action.
Good reasons to commit

Bad reasons to commit
- The session feels visually cluttered but the musical decision is still unresolved.
- You hope bouncing will make weak audio sound more professional.
- You are trying to hide a routing, phase, timing or clipping problem instead of fixing it.
- You want to delete source files to save space before the project is safely archived.
- You are merging stems merely because separate tracks feel inconvenient.
- You cannot explain what future editability you are giving up.

AI-assisted work needs stronger lineage, not weaker lineage
When a project moves from generated audio to stems, edits, MIDI conversion, voice transformation, resampling and final production, a single filename such as final.wav tells almost nothing about how the asset came to exist.
Keep enough information to trace the important production lineage: generated or human source → selected version → edited parent → committed child → downstream use. This supports troubleshooting, collaboration, provenance and your own future memory.
Common commit failures
Tail cut off
Reverb, delay, sustain or ambience ends abruptly because the render boundary stopped too early. Re-render with the full musical tail.
Automation missing
The new asset does not match playback because a route, effect return or automation lane was excluded. Verify the signal path before trying again.
Timing moved
The child asset starts from a different origin or includes latency that breaks alignment. Return to the parent and verify timing before downstream assembly.
Source deleted
The commit becomes unnecessarily irreversible. Restore from archive if possible and change the workflow: committed children do not replace their parents by default.
Format changed accidentally
The production decision became mixed up with technical conversion. Route sample-rate/bit-depth/dither questions to #98 and document any required conversion.
Everything became one stereo file too early
Later balance or repair work now requires reconstruction. Commit only the scope that is genuinely approved.
