Control Dynamics Without Flattening the Music
Compression can steady a vocal, control an uneven instrument, shape punch or reduce distracting level swings. It can also erase impact, exaggerate noise and make every section feel equally loud. The goal is not to “add compression.” The goal is to decide whether the performance needs dynamic control, test the smallest useful amount and keep the change only if the complete musical result improves.

Use this when the source and arrangement are stable enough that the problem is genuinely dynamic: peaks jump out, quiet words vanish, sustain is inconsistent, or the part needs a different sense of punch or control.

Diagnose one dynamics problem, run one controlled compression test, compare it at similar perceived level and complete a Dynamics Control Record v1.
Compression is not “make it louder”
A compressor reduces level according to rules you set. After that reduction, you may choose to restore output level for comparison. That is why a compressed version can seem immediately more impressive even when its dynamics are worse. Compare at similar perceived loudness whenever possible.

Understand the controls as decisions
Threshold
Determines when the compressor begins responding. A lower threshold generally means more of the signal enters the compression process. The correct point depends on the source and the job.
Ratio
Determines how strongly level above the threshold is reduced. More is not automatically better; high ratios can make the processor increasingly obvious.
Attack
Controls how quickly compression responds after the signal crosses threshold. Faster attack can control sharp peaks but may remove useful punch and consonant detail. Slower attack can preserve the front edge while allowing more transient through.
Release
Controls how the compressor recovers after the signal falls back. Too fast can create obvious pumping or distortion-like movement; too slow can keep the sound held down into the next phrase.
Knee
Where available, knee changes how gradually compression moves into its full ratio around the threshold. Treat it as a feel/control choice, not a quality setting.
Output / makeup gain
Restores level after gain reduction. Use it for a fair before/after comparison, not as proof that the compressed version sounds better because it is louder.

Four realistic compression tests
Uneven lead vocal
First decide whether the problem is global or only a few words. If local, automation may preserve more performance. If the whole performance swings unpredictably, test gentle compression while protecting diction and emotional peaks.
Kick has no punch
Do not assume more compression creates punch. Check the source, balance and attack first. A compressor with the wrong timing can remove exactly the transient you wanted.
Bass sustain jumps around
Confirm notes, arrangement and source are consistent enough. Then test compression for steadier sustain while listening for pumping against the kick.
Whole mix feels flat
If every section has similar density and energy, the problem may be arrangement—not insufficient bus compression. Preserve musical contrast before adding more control.

Dynamic symptom: What changes in level or punch are distracting?
Location: Full performance, section, phrase or occasional peaks?
Simpler-owner test: What happened when you tried level or automation first?
Compression job: State one specific purpose.
Protected traits: What movement, punch, diction or emotion must survive?
Controls changed: Threshold / ratio / attack / release / other, and why.
What stayed constant: Protect the comparison.
Before / after: What improved?
Collateral effect: Did you lose attack, movement, clarity or contrast? Did noise/pumping increase?
