Uber & Uber Eats Driver Requirements in Alberta in 2026
What changes when you want to drive passengers versus deliver food in Alberta, plus the documents, screening and vehicle rules to check before you sign up.
Alberta's major Uber markets include Calgary and Edmonton. Passenger driving requires an appropriate Alberta licence, screening and vehicle registration/inspection steps; delivery has a separate, simpler path.
Passenger driving and Uber Eats are not the same signup
This is the first thing to get right. Passenger rideshare is more heavily regulated and usually adds licence-class, screening, inspection, insurance or local bylaw requirements. Delivery-only work can have a different age, vehicle and screening path.
- Passenger licence: Uber currently requires a valid Alberta Class 1, 2 or 4 licence for passenger driving in Calgary and Edmonton.
- Screening: Alberta drivers must complete annual screening, including a 3-year driver abstract and vulnerable-sector criminal screening.
- Vehicle: rideshare vehicles require the appropriate Class 1-55 registration and must meet local inspection and age rules. Calgary and Edmonton do not use identical vehicle-age limits.
- Uber Eats: Uber separately allows eligible delivery people to use car, bike or scooter depending on market; do not assume passenger-driver licensing rules apply unchanged to delivery-only work.

If you want to deliver with Uber Eats
Uber's Canadian delivery guidance currently says car couriers generally need an accepted driver's licence for their location, valid insurance, proof of work eligibility and background screening. Bike or foot delivery can have different minimum ages and does not use the same vehicle-document path. Always choose the delivery option during signup and confirm the exact requirements Uber shows for your city.

If you want to drive passengers
Use the rideshare requirements above first. The exact promotion attached to a passenger referral can vary by market and account, so do not assume an offer displayed in one province will be identical in another.
